RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. AUCKLAND WINTER MEETING.
AUCKLAND, June 19. The weather was showerjr and the track heavy for the third day's racing of the Auckland Racing Club's Winter meeting, but the attendance was fair. The sum of £9308 was passed through the totalisator. The principal jumping event — the Winter Handicap Steeplechase— went to Voltigeur 11, who held Princess of Thule and Plain Bill safe in the run to the post. The Winter Welter ■was run in heavy rain. The following are the results : — SECOND MAIDEN STEEPLECHASE, Of lOOsovs. About two miles and a-quarter. 142— Mr J. Jack's gr g Pungarehu^by Eros — Maritana, aged, 9.7 (M'Gregor) .. 1 49— Mr Tooman's Kowhai, 12.1 (Owner) .. 2 27— Mr Ross's Hylas, 9.9 (Ross) 3 Also started: 151 Sudden 11.12, 197 Sylvanus 11.10, 120 Vanquish 10.7, 25 Capford 9.7, 35 Satan 9.7, 37 Tuirne 9.7. . Kowhai was in the van till the wall jump was negotiated, where he was joined by Satan, Tuirne, and Pungarehu, but at the hurdle at the back Hylas had run into second place, where Sylvanus came down. As they raced down the hill for home Pungarehu set sail after Kowhai, and a great battle to the post 'resulted in a victory for the grey gelding by rather more than a length from Kowhai, with Hylas some distance away third, and Sudden a bad fourth. Vanquish was pulled up in the early stages of the race, and Satan ran off at the double. Capford fell at the sod wall. Time, 4min 52 3-ssec. On the totalisator, £773; dividend, £4 17s. Beddington was the first to -move off, but . Tukapa took charge before a furlong had been covered, and he stayed at the head of affairs until they neared the home turn, where Crusoe dashed into the lead. He was, however, beaten j at the distance, and Beddington held his own j in the run home, winning by two lengths. St. Peter was third. Time, lmin 54sec. On the totalisator, £1880; dividend, £9 15s. Beddington and Rosella were bracketed on | the machine, as also were St. Peter and St. Ursula. WINTER STEEPLECHASE, Of 250sovs. About three miles. 54— Mr T. B. Dingo and Princess of Thule led for the first circuit, only to give way to Voltigeur 11, who bowled along with a five lengths' lead, and ! won by half a dozen lengths from Princess of i Thule, who was closely pressed by Plain Bill. i Time, 6min 42sec. I Hair Trigger was always in the first flight, i and, landing over the last hurdle in company with Royal Conqueror, who came at the distance, lasted long enough to beat his opponent |by three-parts of a length. Tresham was first away, and rounding the distance Balbirnie and Employer were his nearest attendants. Tresham was challenged by Balbirnie to the post, but lasted long enough to win by a neck. Also started: 75 Freewill 31.10, 32 Monk 11.10, 34 Terence 11.7, 37 Starlight 11.7. Miss Drury led Freewill to the water, where the latter ran into the lead ; but as they ascended the hill Natation was in front, and. landed over the wall into the course a couple of lengths ahead of Miss Drury, and beat her in the run home by a clear length, Peter Simple being eight lengths away third. Time, 3min 39sec. On the totalisator, £734 ; dividend, £1 17s. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Five furlongs. 245— Mr J.
