The Bishop of Hereford's Betting "^ui, Which caused such a stir in England amongst Sporting men and the various papers deVoted to racing when introduced in the tlouso of T<ords last month, has been withdrawn. The stringent nature of the bill was the cause of a public meeting held in London recently, when some of the principal person? in the racing and social world tvere present, and spoke very strongly Skgainst thp measure. Instead of moving the jßecond reading of the bill, as originally arranged. Dr Pereivnl ha; dpcided to proceed by referring the question of betting to a Select Committee. To this, end, says the London Sportsman, he will move, " That a Select Committee be appointed to inquire into the increase of public bettino amongst Jill cla&sos, and whctliei.- any legislate e rneaJures are possible and expedient for checking he abuses occasioned theicby."
