CANTERBURY.

A mysterious affair happened on the 13th at New Brighton, between 7 and 8 o'clock. One George Bailey, whilst out walking, saw what looked like a mass of seaweed in the water. Getting closer, he was astonished to see a woman get up and walk along the beach. He followed her, but lost sight of her in the darkness. (J. Blunt, of Oxford, to the professorship of modern languages-. Several membeis of the boaid maintained that the board .should have a lectureship instead of a professorship, and appoint a New Zealander. but a majority decided for a ])fr>fes^oiship, and thought that someone s-bould be biought who had had an oppoitunity of becoming actually acquainted with the languages to be taught.
