CANTERBURY.
A mysterious affair happened on the 13th at New Brighton, between 7 and 8 o'clock. One George Bailey, whilst out walking, saw what looked like a mass of seaweed in the water. Getting closer, he was astonished to see a woman get up and walk along the beach. He followed her, but lost sight of her in the darkness. The people made a thorough search of the beach, but found no trace of the woman, except indications that she had sat in wet clothes- on a seat.
At the Chiistchuich S M Court George Henry Raymond was charged with using the title of "Doctor " without being a dulyregistered medical practitioner. The evidence showed that the defendant had advertised himself as Dr Raymond, and that he had a plate on his gate insciibed. " Dr Raymond, aurist, oculist, and botanic physician." When. <isked for his- diploma*, lie had replied evasively. Ihe defendant claimed that the qualification " botanic physician" prevented the 'public being deceived by the term "doctor" Mr Stringer, lor the piosecutiou. lefenod to the ea^-e of William Ntanton m Dunedin. Tho defendant, who stutod that, he was impecunious, was fined £10, with seven days m which to pay the same, oi m default 14 days" imprisonment. William Oariott, a gn ccr at Wilson's road, Christchurch. was found by his wife at 7 a.m. on Thuisday in the urinal with his throat cut He was taken to the hospital, where he died at 11 o'clock The Canterbuiy College Board of Governors have decided to appoint Air T. (J. Blunt, of Oxford, to the professorship of modern languages-. Several membeis of the boaid maintained that the board .should have a lectureship instead of a professorship, and appoint a New Zealander. but a majority decided for a ])fr>fes^oiship, and thought that someone s-bould be biought who had had an oppoitunity of becoming actually acquainted with the languages to be taught.
