A shooting match between teams lppre' senting the East Taieri and Bruce Riflet was held at Fairfax on Saturday, and re« suited in a win for the former by the. small majority of 11 points; the scores being Taieri 663, Milton 652. The weather was a lufle hot and bright for shooting, bub the scores registered were very creditable. A London cable states that m the billiard championship of 9000 up Dawson beat Ste venson by 3204- . On Sunday enormous numbers of muttonbirds were disporting themselves off the Cape at Oamaru (irays the North Otago Times). These birds pass along the coast' at regular seasons, but it is seldom thafc their numbers have been so great as on ths present occasion. At intervals the sea was. churned into foam as they moved about in quest of whatever food made its appearance near the surface. The steam tiawler Doto, charteied by the Government for testing the fi-hin? giounds in the Ka;para and at the Manukau, met with only moderate success at the Manukau.
