number of our clients is proof positive of tne confidence reposed in us on all sides. Supplies, although somewhat (larger than usaal at this time, owing to the reduction in the pries of rabbits for freezing, are still limited, but are growing larger every week. Prices aie good, full clearbaoks, or incomings, as they are also so-called, bringing up to Is per lb/which is equal to about 2d a skin, and is therefore better than present price of rabbits, considering the extra work and risk. We shall be pleased to supply labels on application, but packages ad^resed simply, " Remshardt and Co." ; or " Remshardt, Dunedin," will always reach us. Sheepskins. — Market quiet, but firm lierirto and fine haifbred arc worth up to 4s each, coarser sorts up to 3s 6d. Hides and Calfskins arc firm at excellent prices. We can take all coming forward at highest current rates, for the large orders we hold. Tallow.— Rough fat 11s to 12s, rendered up to 16s per cwt, according to quality. OAMAB.U MARKET REPORT. A. Montzson and Co., Tyne street, report for the week ending April 17 — "Wheat. — Market for this contmups quiet, and not very much is changing hands at 2s 3d for Tuscan, and 2s 2d to 2s 2J_d for velvet. Oats.— Market for tliese is- very dull, and quotations nominally are Is 4Jd foi milling, and Is 3d for duns and Danish. Barley. — Prime samples meet with a good demand at 2s 4d, but medium quality is hard to sell at from Is 9d to 2s. Potatoes.— The mam ciop is now coming oi» the market, and prices are inclined to recede ; prime Derwents being worth 45", sacks included, at country sidings. The above quotations are all delivered ?t store, Oamaru, sacks extra, except where oth' I'-wise1 '-- wise mentioned. CONSOLIDATING INSURANCE INTERESTS. The tendency to the amalgamation ancl consolidation of large insurance interests which has characterised the history of insurance for some years past has just received a great impulse. Some years ago the Royal Insurance Company '" absorbed," or rather acquired by amalgamation, the business of tho Queen Insurance Company, and at one stroke its yearly revenue from fire premiums was raised to over two millions sterling. We are informed (says the Melbourne Argus of March 27) by Mr Charles Salter, manager for Astrnlasia, that he has today received a cable from his head office that the Royal has acquired the business of the Lancashire Insurance Company. The accounts for tho year 1900 of neither company are as yet available, but the fire picinium revenue of both for 1899 is stated ag follows — Royal, £ 2,020,553; Lancashire, £674,542. The total is f2,70-1,-035. The fire premium revenue of thfe Royal is already the largest of zny insurance office in the world, but the amalgamation 311 st effected plpces it very much higher. The total assets of the two companies at December 31, 1890, were as follow Royal, £10,152,009 , Lancashire, £1.731,457. For the present, until all formabties are completed, tho Lancashire will continue to transact business as a sepaiate institution. Apart from the foregoing announcements, an important consideration presents itself m relation to life mauTance. For a considerable time the Australian life offices enjoyed the advantages derivable horn the popularity of the mutual system, and from high, but. as the event proved, rather aitificial, lates of interest. But the rate of mteiest has seriously fallen here, the British officps have brought themselves up-to-date in the matter of liberality of conditions, and the autocratic character of their control has kept their expenses down to a reasonable level. Where, then, they »give nine-tentus or fourfifths of the surplus to the policy-holders, they do not compare unfavourably with the Australian offices, and it is quite possible that, avoiding the expense of an active quest pfter busi-< nese, such offices as the Royal, the Liverpool and Lont'oM and Globe, tho North British and Mercantile, and the Northern may again transact a good life business m Australia. The contingency is one that the purely local offices probably have to face at one time or the other. THE LABOUR JkARKET. John Skeue and Son report aa follows under date Apul 16 — Orders are coming in briskly for goec l , useful ploughmen, we anticipate having a very busy season ni this line; men are fairly plentiful, and orders entrusted to us do not hang long. There is also a fair demand for shephercls, blacksmiths, couples, hotel hands, and expe.isnced -milkers. We quote wages Blacksmiths (stations), 25s to 30s , couples, £70; shepheids, 20s io 255; ploughmen, 20b, 22s 6d ; milkers', 17s 6d to 22s 6d , grooms and gardeners, 203 ; carters, 6s 6d per day ; day porters, 20s ; useful lads. 10s to 15s , hcusekespeis, 15s; cooks and bakers, 555.
