NEW ZEALAND PRODUCE IN LONDON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, March 1. WOOL. Messrs Balme to-day leport that since the close of the late auctions some little inquiry has been experienced in the London market for merino wools from New Zealand, Australia, and the Cape, and a few hundred bales have changed hands for home trade account at rates oa a par with those current during the final days of the late series. Business 111 the manufacturing districts has not undergone any appreciable change during the same period, and the tenor of advices continues to be of a somewhat unsatisfactory character, although the reports from English centres indicate a rather more favourable state of affairs than prevails on the Continent. The next auctions at Antwerp will open on the 6th and close on the Bth March. DAIRY PRODUCE. Messrs Weddel say that there is now an easier feeling 111 the market for New Zealand and Australian butter for both " choicest " and " finest " grades, but prices are not quotably lower. The Rakaia, with a shipment of butter from New Zealand, is just beginning to unload. Tho total shortage from Australia up to date for the present season, compared with last, is 33,000cwt, every colony showing a deficiency. The market for New Zealand and Canadian cheese is very quiet, and prices are easier for both classes. MISCELLANEOUS. Values for copra are rather easier. Messrs Flack, Chandler, and Co. sxate that the market is very quiet, with little offering. For canned meats the demand has ruled steady and prices are still high ; during the past three weeks no cases have been received from New Zealand. NEW ZEALAND MEAT. From the C. C. and D. Company this, afterneon I hear thst the trade in New Zealand mutton has shown ,no improvement ; there is still the same lack~e£ denjand both in town and country, and last week's lower prices have not stimulated consumption. Last Friday's market finished badly ; numbers of carcases were returned to the stores, though in ma-ny <jases 3£d per 1b and less was accepted m the attempt to make a clearance. This week the same stagnation prevails, and deliveries have been unusually small, with no present appearance of business becoming brisker. Prices are weaker; the best medium-weight Canterbury sheep have sold at 4Sd per lb, and ethers of best brands, but heaviei, down to 4£d per lb. Dunedin mutton is quoted at 4Jd, and North Island at 4d to 4|d per lb. The Tomoana has brought 55,164 caioases of New Zealand mutton and the Matatua 913 ; while the Rakaia has also arrived. With regard to New Zealand lamb, the C. C. and D. Company tell me that the few new season's lambs which have sold have made about Cd per lb ; but not many have been marketed. The Tomoana brought 14,581 carcases, and the Matatua 1972, but none have as yet been landed from either vessel. This week trade in the frozen beef market has been at a standstill. Th.c C. C. and D. Company announce the arrival 01 7684 qiiarters from New Zealand, and note that though restrictions as to once have been temporarily removed, and plain, indifferent quality Australian beef has had the chance of being sold if buyers would be found for it, veiy little has been moved. New Zealand hmdquaiters have made 3Jd, and forequarters 3gd for the few sold.
