OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION

The committee of the above association met on the 3rd m the office of Messrs John Reid and Sons. There were present — Messrs John Reid (in the chair), Adams, Mercer, Pioudfoot, (tieasurer), Langlands (secretary), and Dr Will. Apologies were received from Maesrs Colm Allan and T. K. Sidey.

The Secretary reported that the district meeting at Waikouaiti came off oa the 13th March, and was a pronounced success. The local committee* 9 arrangements for the comfort and pleasure of visitors were thoughtfully planned and most successfully carried out, and they and the residents generally were actuated by the one desire to see everything go off well. The catering was on the most liberal scale, and the ladies seemed to forget their own wants in attention to others. The society's gatherings in the Victoria Hall were always interesting, space being limited, but could not compare with the animated groups on the Domain that memorable afternoon — the pleasurable excitement of friends, long parted, meeting — the hearty hand-shakes, the interested and happy parties in earnest conversation, breaking up only to reform again with others, made a scene that would not readily be foigotten by all who were fortunate enough to be present. A cordial vote of thanks was passed to the local committee at Waikouaiti for their perfect arrangements ; also to the Railway department fo*- the excursion rates granted for the occasion.

The Secretary also suggested that a gathering on the lines of our own be held there one night during the winter months, and could personally testify to the excellence of the local talent.

The Secretary also reported that the anniversary reunion to celebrate the jubilee of the arrival of the Titan and other vessels was held in the Victoria Hall on the 21st March, and attended by a few of the survivors, and largely by descendants of passengers, as also by a lerge number of members and their families. Votes of thanks were unanimously passed to the ladies, who, on such short jiotiee, had catered for, and laid out the tables; also to the ladies and gentlemen, who, each and all, at a moment's notice, had assisted to carry out the programme, those previously spoken to failing to appear.

That being the last month of the financial year, the secretaiy was instructed to call in all out-standing subscriptions. Fifteen new members were enrolled.

The following deaths were recorded — Mrs William. Brash, 85 (Catherine Johnstone), Ngaparay Three Bells, 1858; William Wil°on, 80, St. Clair, Clutha. 1856; Thomas Culling, 69, St. Clair, Aiax, 1849; William Heckler, 71, Waikouaiti, Rajah, 1853; Mrs Andrew Hewitsou, S3 (Margaret Farquhar), Milton, Sevilla, 1859.
