AN UNUSUAL CASE.
INVEROARGILL, April 4.
A singular case came before the court to-chy. James Lee, aged 16, was charged with assaulting a girl aged 13 in June ia«-t. Both are half-castes. The gill gave bnth to a child, and the youth admitted paternity. He was then charged with a, criminal offence (the girl being under the age of consent), but while he Mas on leniand the parties married with their parents,' consent. Sergeant O'Neill pointed out that Judge Williams had he-Id under similar circumstances that a wife was not a competent witness against the husband. He therefore offered no evidence, and the case was dismissed.
