unknown Chronicle.
The first number of this publication is to hand by last San Fianciseo mail. It is published in Prescot, Ontario, Canada, of which tho pubhbher speaks as a small town, remote tiom the leading centres of the game, snd of himself as being of a name unfamiliar to most of those to whom such a jciunrl appeals, but as tho possessor of some leisure, a modest printing press, with a practical knowledge ot its management, some acquaintance with the hteraluie of the game and a genuine enthusiasm for the >voik before him. In tho Dominion a small town may speedily grow, but the publication in question appeals to a larger cucle than any town, la-gc or small ; and though it may be said that •' it 13 net m mortals to command Huccess," the publisher, so long as he can keep up to the standard oi the fust number, will well destive it. The news and notes are interesting and well selected. The selected pioblems are excellent, and the games, although not altogether new, have been chosen judiciously. A new' feature is the alternation of problems and games, which may be advantageously followed by other chess publications. After studying a game a problem may well be taken as a des=ert. We cordially wish the new periodical entire success. No mote pleatant or instructive pastime can be found than chess, and none so eminently fitted for pleasantly whilmg away the long winter evenings of Oux Lady of the Snows, more especially in the remote settlements, where there may often be few indoor amusements of the kind accessible. Although chass is cosmopolitan, it is not possible to avoid feeling a special interest m a chess publication published and conducted by and for the benefit of our cousins over the water. Some New Zcalanders formerly had their homes in the Northern Dominion, and many more have dear kindred and friends among its citizens.
