CHESS TOURNAMENT.
CHEISTCHURCH, April C.
The chess tournament called out only six competitors— namely . W. Mason (Wellington, the present champion), R. J. Barnes (excharnpion, Wellington Working Men's Club), J. Mason (Timaru), J. Wood (Canterbury), D. Forsyth (Dunedm). The draw was as follows: W. E. Mason v. fi. J. Barnes, J. Mason v. D. Forsyth, J. Wood a bye. At 5.30 Barnes was a pawn to the bad, with a stiong attack. At the other boards the games were fairly even, ard things^ were not materially changed after the evening's play. April 8. The chess tourney was continued to-day. E. J. Barnes beat J. O. Barnard, D. Forsyth beat W. E. Mason, J. Wood and J. Mason played a drawn game, and the grme between Barnes and W. E. Mason was ako drawn.
