GAMES.
A remarkable game played in the firet round at the Monte Carlo Tourney, between Messrs F. J. Marshall and M. Tchigonn. Score from the Daily Telegraph : —
(Notes by Editor Times and Mirror.) (a) A bizarre opening analysed in the German Handbuch. (b) The Handbuch recommends 2 p-q b 1 or b-kt 5. In a game, Gunsberg v. Burn (1899), the following variation was played . — 2 kt-k b3, 3 B-Kt 5, p-k 3, 4 P-K 4— a well-known position m the French Defence. (c) The same position is arrived at via 1 P-K 4, p-k 3 ; 2 P-Q 4, p-q 4 ; 3 Kt-Q B 3. (d) An obsolete defence abandoned as inefficient years ago. Modern players mostly favour 3 kt-k b 3, but Lasker recommends 3 p x p. (c) An experiment, the orthodox continuation is 4 P x P, which experience has shown is favourable for the first player. (f) Suggested m a similar position by Hirschback in the Schachzeitung (1867). (g) Although this appears hazardous, it seems justified by Black's subsequent play, and it is the only way of preserving Black's advantage. (h) A danng resource, which would have paralysed anyone but a (master. (i) Tempting Black to play 9 b x b, then Q checks, regaining the piece, and once more Black's weak spot at his q 1 is menaced. (j) Black is now two pawns ahead, with the queens off. (kI A desperate device, evidently well calculated. (l) All this is most ingenious, but we cannot find any way to save the piece. (m) The Telegraph says that later on Marshall actually had Rook and Pawn v. Rook, out could not win. In the mid-gpme it looked as if Tchigonn should have won.
