Moxd vi April 8. On 1 y one protest was lodged during tli^ day. In (he Handicap Time Trot, Mr J. Rutherford protested against Flower Girl a"d Chromo on the ground that they started before their time. The stewards at once held a meeting to consider the matter. Mr Rutherford, hi his evidence, said several horses started too soon, Flower (iirl and Chromo being among th/cm. Mr J Grindley, the starter, f-aid ho was not certain about .Chromo staiting before her tivr.e Flower Girl was> away c\ er so mufh befoie her time. He "ang out to Flower Gir!, but could not get her back, as sbe was too far away. She vent off perhaps Bfeo before her time. She started in company with Felix (21sec). He thought Chromo sKirted at the right time. Chnllis, the rider of llouer Girl, said the siarier called out to him to go. Felix had six ov se\f>n pei onds start of him. They certainly did not start together. M. Smith, the rider of Felix, was called, hut could nob he found. Mr Gourley said that at the start he beard Mr Grindley say that Chromo, George L., fi«d Flower Girl had gone away before their time. Mr Grindley, recalled, said he was certain Flower Girl got away befoie her time. It was decided to uphold the protest so iar as Flower Girl was concerned, and ihe mare being disqualified, Chromo was declared the winner. The various events were started well up to time. Mr J. Grindley gave general satisfaction as starter, Mr C. J. Gore fulfilled the duties of judge in a way that pleased everybody, and Mr AY. Carncross was a model secretary. 161J Patron got the best of the start, but after going two furlongs Gladys II and Silver Rupee had caught him, and the three raced in a, bunch along the back stretch. After passing the half distance Patron fell behind a- length, Gladys II and Silver Rupee being still in company. Entering the straight the favourite came away, and increasing her lead all the way to the post won by three lengths, five lengths separating second and third. Time, lmin 34 3-ssec. Dividend, £1 6s. At the furlong post Brisa had dropped back three lengths. Halfway round Spider led by two lengths from Red Banner, with Belligerent third, a similar distance off. Three furlongs from home Belligerent went up to Red Banner, and Brisa also made a forward move. Entering the straight Spider and Belligerent settled down to a, fine race, and, "both under the whip, a rattling pace landed Spider the winner by a length, Red Banner being six lengths behind Belligerent, and Brisa a good fourth. Gertie wmit io the front at once and took a strong lead. At the end of a mile Camille, Chromo, and Flower Cirl went up. the la.stjmmed going into first place. The leader increased her advantage ?11 the way to the post, and won easily by six lengths. Chromo -was second, forty yards in advance of Booby, who was trotted in harness. Time. 3mm 56sec.

A protest was lodged by Mr J. Rutherford against Flower Girl and Chromo on the ground that they started before time. After heaiing evidence, the stewards upheld the protest against Flower Girl and awarded the race to Chromo. The dividend on Chromo was £8 2s.

EASTER HANDICAP,

Of 40sovs; second horse to receive ssovs out oi the stakes. Seven furlongs. 88 1 , — Mr A. G-. Hill's b g Belligerent, aged, 7.12 (S. Smith) 1 33^— Mr D. Napier's b m Witchcraft, 6yrs, 7.0 (E. Sharpshell came with a rush and took the lead, Silver Rupee and Patron bettering their positions at the same time. The favourite kept her lead and won rather comfortably by a length and a-half fiom Patron, Silver Rupee being a good third, and the others close up. Time, Imm 3sec. Dividend, £1 19s.
