INVERCARGILL, April 9,

The annual meeting of the Riverton Racing Club was commenced on Easter Monday, and, though a good deal of rain fell in th«

morning, the weather was peiffct while the lacing lasted. There was a good attendance, and the racing was iiiteie c tmg. Some excellent finishes weie witne^ed. The Open ytceplecha-e furnished the biggest surpn c e of the d<\.y. Peter Simple, ridden by Can, came do-un at the second hurdle, leaving Johnny, with J. Cotton up. with things apparently all his own way, the other starter — Nimblefoot — baulking »o much as to eclipse all his chances. However, after Peter Simple's mishap, he was caught after ■a chase of seven or eight chan.s and remounted. e\entu\lly winning by a neck, amid tumultuous applause; although, had Cotton not been caught napping, he would have bad no difficulty in landing the stake v.ith Johnny. Thp sum of £2273 was r ut through the totalisator, a? against £2838 for the corresponding day last year, the latter being a record. The following are the lesults: —

This month about 200 prospecting license.-, taken up for speculative dredging purposes, will expire ( c ays the Grey River Argus). In the maiority of capes nothing has been clone, and the warden may not grant another 12 months. On the other hand, it is contended that no one was injured, and the State has benefited to the extent of £1000 over these leases, which remain in exactly the same position as they did a year ago.
