Notes from Cromwell.

(From Our Own Correspondent.l CROMWELL, March 26. The river has fallen r.gain to the ievel it was at before the rise last week. The Kelly and Casey dredge had a start yesterday, but only for a, while. The machinery seems to run smoothly. The Second Magnetic oreclge had a stop yesterday owing to a breakage. She is, however, working again. The gicund is proving pretty rough. I hear a new dredgernaster has been appointed to the Arrow Junction. The pontoons of the Golden Standard are not down yet. Rumour has it that they will be unable to get down this winter. The Tacon's Carchona dredge is-still working, but so far the result cannot be ascertained. The Cardrona No. 1 has also been working steadily, but the returns are kept quiet. The Junction Electric should start in a day or two, and the Extended to-morrow. At a meeting of Richards's Beach shareholders here, it was decided to recommend the claim to be bored. The Shepherd's Creek dredge is working all right, but I am afraid the returns are poor. The Smith's Creek dredge is getting oa towards completion. The Cromwell dredge has started work, after repamng all last week. The Alpine No. 2 dredge is still busy opening out. Her return this week should be fairly good. Jir.irh 29. The Royal Tvlaori contiact for the machinery has been let to Mr Bam, who will start operations immediately. About the last load of machinery for this dredge was delivered yesterday. The" Alpine No. 2 dredge is getting coarse gdd, p.ece3 from 2dwt to 6dwt showing. Next week, if no broken time is made, the return shou'J bo veiy satisfactory. The Central Electric is doing a bit of reiiii'T.p cica-iOjjTliy, otherwise the returns would bo greatly increased. Th? M-f.r;eiic dredge has been icpairiug since my l?s^ tclegra.rt. The Alpine Consols dredge may start work on Me'lay I have heard nothing about the Mernmac this week, but a rumour says Galvanic has bottomed on gold. Theie is a little gold showing on the Upper Magnetics tables. The Electric return will be good again. The Junction Electric is- hard at work since Thursday morning. The Electric Extended dees not seem to be doing much this week, but bottom was reached to-day. Probably next week a return may be given. April 1. The local returns last week proved very satisfactory lo shareholders here, and there is every likelihood of an increase this week. The Electric Extended is on fair bottom, and a return may be taken for granted. The Alpine No. 2 seems to be doing veiy well, and if no broken time 13 incurred this week's return should be greatly in excess of last week's. The Alpine Consols dredge will not start for a week or more. , The Magnetic dredge is at work again, the bottom tumbler causing the dredge to stop for some days. The Cromwell dredge return should be on the increase horn this date. The Junction Electric dredge should also obtain a 1 cry fan- return. The Upper Magnetic wash is improving gieat'v. The Kelly and Caaey dredge should stait shoitK, though not till after the Easter holidays. The Second Magnetic dredge is expected to do bettei a little further up, the bottom being softer. The Bannockbnrn Creek dredge buckets are being fixed 111 position The nver is still going down, and the dredges aip making the most of it. The machinery on the Great Central is pretty well finished as far as the erection of it is concerned.
