WINGATUI

Since writing last week re improvements a Wingatui, the D.J.C. Committee have held, a meeting, and have decided to extend the railing .-ound the course from the threefurlong to the ?ix-furlong post. When that work is completed, there will still remain a gap of about three furlongs unfeneec, which, no doubt, will be attended to as soon as ways and means allow. While it ij gratifying "to know that the club intend making this improvement, it is as well to say that attention to that dip in the straight is of the firdt importance, and it is to be hoped that the coiTLing May meeting wilt iesuit in euch a Mibptantial profit that the club may see their way to remedy the defect during the winter Another alteration that has be?:i decided on is the removal of the four furloag and the- seven furlong posts farther back. When the half-mile post has been drifted to its proposed new position, there will be a straight run all along the bottom sire-teh, wlulo in the ea^c of the seven fur lone; post it, will be straight sailing all along ths back stretch. The spot where the sev^i furlong post at present str.nds is the m^l awkward of any on the course at which to start a race, on account of its being on the bend. It is evident the club are making efforts to silence the cavillers, and there need be little doubt that with a fair amount of luck the Winpatui convincing ground will, in a "'iorl period, be second to none in the colony
