Some important auction sales of cattle are announced to take place in Southland this week, and the result is awaited with considei- ] able interest. <■ Store Sheep.— Large sales by auction have ' been held during the past week, chiefly in ' North Otago and Central Otago. The demand i for first class young breeding ewes, both crosE- £ bied and halfbred, has been good, and recent I values for these have been fairly well main- ] tamed. Aged and inferior ewes oi all classes were much neglected, and sales were only pos- i pible at a reduction of fiom Is 6d to 2s on the i values current at the February auctions. The ] decline in the price of fat sheep, both in the 1 London and local markets, has told its tale in tho case of fattening wethers. Buyers \ showed a decided inclination to stand off unless at a reduction corresponding to the fall of fat sheep, and as vendors in many instances c showed no dispositioin to meet them, an unusually large proportion of the wethers were t passed in at the auctions. Feed everywhere
) is abundant, and vendors being confident of an! 3 early improvement in the market are holdj ing their wethers over for futiue disposal. 1 Lambs met with a fair demand up to a. certain point, but as the season is becoming far advanced for fattening, values have receded to I the extent of la per head. Very few first class 1 merino ewes are on offer, most of the station 5 lines Laving already changed hands. The , demand for this class of sheep seems to be . practically supplied, and values must be quoted! , from Is to 2a lower than they were a month. i ago. Country Sales.— Central Otago Stock Sales:' l Donald Reid and Co. zeport »s follows — Ths I second of the season's series of stock sales in, i Central Otago were held at Rough Ridge on Thursday, 14th ; at Wedderbum on Friday, 15th ; and at Waipiata pn Saturday, the 16thi March. The total entry at the three centres was 24,142 sheep and 119 cattle, and was made up as follows: — At Rough Ridge, 8129 sheep and 3 cattle; Wedderburn, 4374 sheep; Waipiata, 11,639 sheep and 116 cattle. There was a fairly large attendance of settlers and others at all the sales, but only a few outside buyers. The sale at Rough Ridge was probably the best so far as prices were concerned, but the demand all through was not so brisk, nor were prices as high rfs those realised at the first; series. Bidding was without animation, lambs and wethers, unless quits fat and fit for export, having a particularly slow sale, and at prices showing a decline of fully Is on those realised at the first series. Ewes and fat lambs | had a fairly good sale, and the prices realised! must be considered satisfactory. Fully twoj thirds of the total entry were bought by settlers j in the surrounding districts.
