Inquirer. — We caimofc find the paragraph you mention, but believe it appeared, and was to the effect that Miss Griffen's object, which ■was a perfectly legitimate one, was achieved long ago, and that the person referred to was trading on her similar name without giving any guarantee of her bona fides. Surprised. — The black spot would not be fatal to the pig's chance of a prize. In competition with others the spot would count for one point against him. A Subscriber. — (1) We cannot explain the cause, but it is a very common complaint with beth y,oung and old, many being troubled without knowing it. (2) Ask your chemist to mix the following for you : — Santonine, sgr; calomel, 3gr; jalap, sgr; mix lot one dose. Tak,e early in the morning, two -hours before breakfast. Repeat in five days. The powder affects the eyes on the day of taking, biyt has no bad effect. After a week take a mixture of iron and quinine. Constant Reader.— Judge Denniston could not have given a verdict in April last, as he had then left for Home. We cannot find that a verdict in this case was delivered either in Dunedin or Christchurch in April last. E. J. — We "have made inquiries and find that it would not be much vise working it unless the stone is pure. The value is about £5 per ton. Jack, Waikaka Valley.— (l) Certificate not required. (2) No; provided the cylinder capacity of the engine does not exceed 200 circular inches, as the traction engine driver's certificate is equivalent to a second-class stationary engine driver's certificate. Country.— (l) Melt equal parts of resin and Burgundy pitch, and spread on very thick calico before it is cool. Although not porous, it is a good plaster. (2) G. T. K. M'Kenzie, 22 Dowling street, Dunedin. Seaman. — The largest vessel that has come to Dunedin wharves was the s.s. Obra, 5456 tons. The deepest draught steamer was the s.s. Moana, which came up on a draught of 20ft 7in. The deepest draught vessel was the ship Glenburn, 21ft. Trooper. — 'JThe New Zealand Mamial for Mounted Rifles, 1895," and, " Musketry Instruction, 1900 " are recommended as useful treatises to study. An acquaintance with the Defence Act is also desirable. But of as much value as any book knowledge are a Close attention to drill and the intelligent vise of the powers of observation. Miner (Kaitangata). — The award was made on the 30th November, 1899, and remains in force until the 30th November, 1901.
