SUMMER MEETING. | To-morrow (Thursday) will see the opening of what it is fully anticipated will be a record meeting for the Dunedin Jockey Club. The ! fields are good in every race, the ground is at present in splendid condition, and as there are a number of visiting "horses from north and south the events will -be more interesting on that account. His Excellency the Governor will arrive in time for the first race, and during the luncheon adjournment will be entertained by the stewards at lunch under the grand stand. Mr H. Piper will undertake the duties of starter ; the public can thus rest assured that all horses will get away on even terms, and can with confidence back their fancy. The grand stand and public booths are under the superj vision of Mr J. Toomey, and the catering for the luncheon is in the hands of Miss Murray My selections are as follow : Hurdle Race. — Southerly Buster. Hack Race. — Mosca 1, Sally 2. Dunedin Handicap. — Red Gauntlet. Otago Cup. — Jupiter 1, Strathnairn 2, Dundas anywhere from first to last. Maiden Plate. — La Reine to win, Mosca and. Hellene next best. Federal Handicap. — Tsaritsa. • ' Salisbury Plate — Blazer. Welter.— Brisa 1, Suzannah 2, Witchcraft 3. THE AUCKLAND CUP. If Advance were an ordinary horse I should unhesitatingly write him out of it with 10.2, but he is not an ordinary horse, and he may have a chance if started, though it would be bad backing to support him now seeing that the owner forfeited his engagement in the New Zealand Cup with 9.9. Seahorse can hardly be ready to carry 9.12; but Malatua may show that his C. J.C. form was all wrong, and if he strips fit I shall take him to be about as dangerous at 8.7 as any horse in the race. Fulmen at 8.6 also reads pretty well. Whether he is going up I have not heard. The throwin of the race is Boreas at 8.4. He is put in at that low weight, I suppose, on the supposition that he cannot stay. Perhaps this is the chance he was hoping for when entering. My first fancies are Malatua, Fulmen, Tortulln, Boreas, Coronet, Miss Delaval, and Ideal, and that is as near as I can hope to get to it in the meantime. There is every prospect of a good field and an interesting race, and I hope that will be the experience of this deserving club. ( PALMEESTON IN A FIX. Not having received it? totalisator permit, the Palmerston Club naturally feels cross and complains of uniust treatment at the hands of thr Colonial Secretary. In July last the Minister intimated that in bis opinion it would b? desirable for Palmer.=ton and Waikouaiti to amalgamate, andhe gave out that if that were done he would giant' the amalgamated club a permit. The suggestion v has not been favourably received. "Palmerston and "Waikouaiti ars not disposed to set up housekeeping together. The Colonial Secretary has, therefore, decided to give a permit to each club alternately, and he announces that after looking into the respective claims he considers Waikouaiti entitled to precedence. The position, consequently, is that Palmerston is cut out this season, and presumably Waikouaiti wi'l have to suffer next year. The question of precedence, though only of secondary hnpartance, ii of some consequence, because in a little while something may occur to alter the position and restore the rights to the club lhat is supposed to suffer in turn a year heace.
