Fat Sheep. — The entry consisted of 3264. These were mostly crossbred wethers and maiden ewes, but included also a iew pens of merino wethers. In comparison with the yardings of the past few weeks, the quality all round was disappointing, and for this reason a large number of the sheep offered lost the competition of exporters. Butchers had .consequently less trouble in siipplying their requirements, and prices for anything but extra prime quality were about Is per head below those of last week. Country Sales. — The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company report" having held their usual fortnightly sale at Balclutha on Friday last, 19th inst., when they offered a good yarding of sheep to a very full gathering of farmers. Prices were booming; as, indeed, they have been for some time past, good hoggets being in especial demand, while wethers and maiden ewes fit for freezing were bought at big prices by dealers operating in thai, direction. Freezing wethers sold readily at from 9A-. to 19s; fair butchers' quality making from 183 to 16s. Firat-cliss hoggets brought up to 15s: medium, 33s 6d to 12s Gd; inferior, lls and 31s Gd. Good cattle were also in keen demand, forward bullocks selling to £7 2s Cd ; ! while cows sold to £6 7s 6d. First-class milkers were also m keen demand, but few were forward. j — The Farmers' Agency Company report having ! held their usual fortnightly .sale at Clinton on Thuraday last, the 18th inst. Tho yarding was a small one, only gome 600 hoggets and wethers being ponned in all. The feature of the sale was a lnngnificent lino of hoggets from Mr Thomas Ross's Church Hill farm, which topped the maiket at 35s iOd, being the record price for hojrgets in this centre. Our sales comprised the following : — On account of Mr H. E. Steel, 341 store wethers at 3Gs 4d, 100 store merino wethers at 103 3d ; Mr James WylKe, jun. (Woiwera). 50 halfbred hoggets at 33°; Mr Thomas Ross (Weiwera), 107 hoggets at 15s 30d ; Mrs D. Black (Waipahi), 70 hoggets at 13s Jld; Mr John Clarke (Wairuna), 104 hoggets at 14s, 56 fat wethers at 19s 3d, 1 draught gelding at £30. Tuesday, October 30. Sheepskins. — Good competition exists at our weekly sales for all coming forward, but, in' sympathy with recent London reports, prices have eased slightly. At this week's sales best cross and haifbreds sold at from 4s to 5s 6d; medium, 2? to 33 6d; best merinos, 4s 6d to 5s 9d ; medium, 2s to 4s ; inferior. Is to Is Gd. Rabbitskins. — A good demand for these eontirmes, with only moderate-sized catalogues oftvring. Best winters sell "at up to ICJd; niediuni, 13d to 15d ; springs, 9d to lid; auturrms, Gd to 9d ; winter blacks, 18d to 23d ; others, 13d to 16d. Hides, Tallow, and Fat. — Hides: A good demand continues for these at up to late quotations. Best ox, 3Jd to 4£d; medium ox and best cow, 3Jd to 3Jd; light and inferior, 2d to 3d. Tallow and fat: All coining forward is readily taken up at fully up to late quotations. Prime iallow, 16s to 3 7s ; medium, 13s to los ; rough fat, 9s to 12s 6d per cwt.
Grain. — Wheat. During the past week or two there has been no keen demand, only a few parcels of prime milling and best quality fowl feed changing hands at up to late quotations, and meanwhile local millers are by no means ncxious to operats to any extent. Quotations are : For prime milling, 2s 6d to 2s 7d ; medium, 2s 2d to 2s sd; good whole fowl wheat, 2s to 2s Id; broken and inferior, Is 6d to Is lOd (sacks in). — Oats: For the past week there has_ been no inquiry to speak of, and very few" changing hands, consequently quotations are considerably reduced, and to effect immediate sales it seems apparent that these or lower prices will have to be accepted. Quotations arc : For best milling, Is 6d ; best feed, Is sd ; medmm, Is 2d to Is 4d (sacks extra, net).
Potatoes. — Consignments have been coming to hand more freely during the past week, and prices are hardly so firm. Best freshly-picked Derwents are selling at from £3 10s to £3 15s; others, £3 to £3 5s per ton.
Chaff. — Prime quality oaten sheaf is not plentiful, and is readily v saleable at up to £2 10s; extra, £2 12s Gd ; while medium and inferior are still in over-supply, and hard to place at from 30s to 45s per ton.
