Notes from Mataura.
(From Oub Own Cobbespondent.)
GORE, October 27
The Otama dredge will be working constantly after next week', and it is reported that she is likely to get good returns. The Otama is the first large dredge on the Mataura above Gore, and the next few weeks should show conclusively whether the high opinions upheld of its payableness by local people are justified. The Charlton Creek's return of 51oz is the record return for this district. The dredge is on a good depth of wash at present, and her returns are expected to keep steadily improving. The Lady Charlton's pontoons will be ready for flotation in about 10 days. The Central Charlton dredge will be working steadily from this week out. The Mataura Central dredge is having the machinery speedily erected. The gantry and poppet heads are in position and ready for the gearing. The latter is pieced together, and will be in position shortly. It is raining very heavily at Garston. The Mataura is very high, and the postmaster at Garston anticipates a big flood.
