Arrowtown, October 26.— Alluvial gold appears to be the mainstay of mining in Otago, speaking, at least, for the near future, whatever "the future in the distance" may do for quartzmining. The Shotcver River, which, for many years, was looked upon as worked out, during the past winter has given proof of the very contrary, many of the parties having done remarkably well. Nor can it be said that the end of the) present prosperity is in sight. Something similar, though on a smaller scale, seems about to be repeated in the Arrow River. The Big Beach Hydraulic Company, Arrow River, have reached bottom, and may be said to be in. full-going order. I was shown the other day a prospect of lMwt of nice, rough gold, one piece weighing; "about Jdwt. The nature of the gold indicates that it comes from the old lun of the Arrow River. This company is likely to be heard of before very long. The Arrow Flat Hydraulic Company, too, have made progress at a rate that ought to be very gratifying to all concerned. The solid ground struck is likely to be of considerable extent, and when bottom hasi onca been reached, and the quality of the claim is ascertained, a long and prosperous run of luck will be before the shareholders. The wash continues to show favourable indications, and as it is prospects of fin© gold are obtained, though not m sufficient quantity to shape for dividends. "
The Arrow Falls Tunnel Company have got squared up again, and are once more working at the face of their claim. Should the bedrock rise, as is expected, the prospects of the company will be greatly improved. News of an enc6uraging chaiacter is circtilating about the Glenrock Company, Macetown, quartz of a> very promising appearance having been struck. In dredging there is nothing of any particular interest to report for the past week.
