THE RIVERS COMMISSION.
(FltOM OdH OWN COBBESPONDENT.)
WELLINGTON, October 25.
The Minister of Mines and Justice (Mr M'Growan) will leave for Auckland as soon as he is able to dispose of some important departmental business. Amongst the matters he has in hand is the filling of the vacancy on the R,oyal Commission set up to inquh-e into the question of the riparian rights to the rivers of the South Island affected by gold mining operations. The commission originally appointed consisted of the present Minister of Lands (Hon. T. Duncan), Mr Hayes (inspecting. engineer of the Mines department), Mr H. A. Gordon (the well-known mining engineer), and the Commissioner of Crown Lands in the districts affected. When the session began the commissioners had almost completed the Otago portion of their work, and it was arranged that they should visit the West Coast as soon as the House rose. Mr Duncan has, of course, ceased to belong to the commission since his elevation to the Cabinet, and the Minister of Justice has offered the vacancy to a gentleman in the south who has long identified 'himself with mining and agricultural interests in 'that part of the colony.
