THE SANDY POINT DREDGE.
The following is a- description of the Sandy Point Company's dredge, known as the Glasgow, which is one of the rno?t powerful on the Molyneux River: —
The hull is 100 ft lopg, with a. beam of 33ft 6in, having a depth of 7ft at the bow and Bft at the stern, and was built by Mr J. Gordon. At the bow is a platform, projecting 10ft, and affixed to the hull and overhanging this platfcrm is a steel gantrs-, into which the ladder blocks arc built. The ladder is 60ft long, and capable of dredging to a depth of 36ft below the water line. The buckets are soven cubic feet in capacity, and run at the rate of 10 buckets per minute. The engine is a compound of 20 nominal horse-power by Messrs Marshall, Sons, and Co., and the boiler, built by the Dundin Foundry Company, is 35 nominal horse-power, so as to supply a plentiful supply of steam for both engine and winch when using the local coal. The winch is fitted with six barrels and a- capstan and a pair of vertical reversing engines. The screen is 4ft 6in in diameter and 30ft 9in long, revolving on friction rollers, and the water is supplied by a 12-inch centrifugal pump, made by Messrs Stevenson and Poole. The tables have: a, surface of 336 square feet. The elevator is 82ft between tumbler centres, and can stack the tailings to a height of 44ft above the water line. It was made at the works of Messrs J. Sparrow and Sons. The machinery and winches were mads by Messrs Johnson and Co., Melbourne. The "dredge was built to plans prepared by Mr F. W. Payne.
