SWINE FEVER IN AUCKLAND.
AUCKLAND, October 20. Owing to the prevalence of swine fever in the Auckland district a large number of pigs have been condemned lately by the stock inspector. The sale of pigs was stopped at the various auctions yesterday by ihe inspector, and also at the stock markets l during the week. October 22. The Govewaaefit stock inspector (Mr
Clifton) and Mr M'Cracksn (Government veterinary surgeon) left for Wellington in connection with the eradication of swine fever, several cases of which have Jjeen discovered in the Auckland district/ The disease is f not specially serious, as up to the present time there has been no very great mortality, but the authorities are taking all measures in their power to eradicate it, more particularly as pigs are becoming such an important adjunct to dairy farms, where they are fed on skim milk. So far the disease is sporadic, and does not seem to have spread throughout the districts. Mr Clifton and those associated with him have been isolating herds in which the fever has been detected, and generally exercising precautions to prevent its spread from one district to another. The principal objects of Mr Clifton's visit to Wellington is to arrange a connected plan of action in the matter.
