NOTES AND QUERIES.
Questions for reply in coming issue to be received nvt later than MONDAY night.
F. P.— lf the letter is accepted for the Times we shall reprint it- as requested. You will, however, require to be brief and pointed in your remarks, and have it copied in a neat and legible hand. The linotype operators •would refuse to accept the MS. sent in your own handwriting. Inquirer, Dipton. — Mr H. M. Davey, consulting engineer, kindly replies : —The power you require can of course be got with almost any fall; the greater the fall the less water is needed, and vice versa. If you send particulars of the quantity of available watei and your available fall we will at once tell you how to proceed, but it -would probably only mislead you if we assumed eithei the one or the other, as they would be very unlikely to fit in wiflT what you have. Jambs R.— Mv Davsy replies : — (1) Yes, Messrs A. and T. Burt keep them, as also probably/ do most foundries. (2) About- 2J to 2J horse powei. (3) A properly constructed wheel of the size you name, well balanced, would give you 2i to 2| horse power. The conditions are not the best for a turbine, as the fall is low and the quantity limited. A most ingenious wheel for such situations has been constructed and worked by Mr W. S. Pillans, of Bal- \ clutha. It is a large horizontal wheel, almost wholly made of wood except the gearing, so could be made locally or nearly so. He would, nc doubt, give you particulars of it if you wrote to him. Mudlark. — (1) In "putting the shot" we cannot conceive how it is possible to throw. The weight is too great to allow of throwing in the ordinaiy 3ense. ~ However, we- subjoin your query, as some reader may take a different view of the matter, and have a word to say by way of reply: — In "putting the shot," what constitutes a fail "piit" as distinguished ifroni a throw? Inquirer. — Usually two men are employed in each shift oil a dredge, the dredgexnaster taking a shift in tho ordinary course. ~" In the cases of the Moa and the Matau dredges, however, there are six men in addition, to the dredgomastcr. Watjmai. — Fi esh-zoilk cheese is, of course, the more nutritious. Skim milk is the poorest of poor substitutes. Geologist. — (1) The specimen is a sedimentary formation. (2) Marl. (3 and 4) Fullers earth. Wit.lowbank asks : — Would you kindly state what are the chemical constituents of feorrej,
seed .' It would be interesting to know its actual value as a food ifor stock of any kind. Sorrel &esds (so far as Aye have looked up authority) have not been investigated chemically. No doubt the Agncultural department might be able to give you the information if you Avrite to the secretary at Wellington. APIK, Avrites : — In the Witness some tAvo months ago, in the "Land and Water Notes," I noticed that C. Robinson, of Nightcaps, was to run someone at Invercaigill a 440ycls footrace, for £50 aside. (1) Please Jean let * me know if the race was run, and avlio Avon, and what ime the race was mn in. (2) Does the J. W. Wilkins, who won the Labour Day Handicap at Dunedin, come from G-ore. — Can any reader oblige with this information. J. E. Waikoikoi. — We are making inquiries. Kaiaveba. — The nevv moon in August, 1899,
came on the 6th, at 11.18 p.m. Passenger by the Ship Result Avrites: — In answer to "J. T. G-.'s" inquiries regarding the time of arrival of the ships Result, City of Melbourne, and Lightning at Port Chalmers, I beg to state that Aye all left Melbourne at the latter end of September, and as Aye were only five and a-half qjj six days coming over it was early in October, I££2, that we arrived. All the vessels arrived the same y/eek, bringing over soineAvhere about 2000 ' passeiigers, mostly men. We were taken off the vessel by a small steamer, and landed at Port Chalmers. W. E. S. — You may certainly keep a gun for your OAvn protection, or for shooting rabbits on your cwn land Avithout being interfered Avith by anyone. Faemeb. — The Magistrates' Courts have jurisdiction to try the case, and if the decision is in favour of "'A," to isue a Avarrant and turn "B" out of possession. Fishebman. — Fishing clubs must be licensed. Subsciubeb, Hawea. — (1) Yes. In case of bush lands residence is not required for foxir years, but in that case double improvements Avill be necessary. The board may dispense Avith personal residence in other cases on sufficient grounds being shoAvn. R. H. M. — Under the present rules of the Hurlinghain Club, it is provided that the goals shall be not less than 250 yards apart, and that each goal shall be 8 yards wide. Aegumbnt. — (1) We should call him a New Zealander. (2) The children of aliens, born in England, except in the case of a hostile invasion, are natural-born subjects. (3) We are not aAva-re that Lord Kitchener has been claimed to be an Englishman, except in the large sense in which that term is so applied as to cover all — Scotsmen. Irishmen, and Welshmen. Moke Cbeek.— There is no local market for either nickel or cobalt, so Aye have been unable to .obtain quotations for you.
