Play in Team Matches.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,— Now and again in an intei-club draughts match we find that some one or other (it matters not which side they happen to. be 011^ when they discover they are pitched
against a miu-h better player tbin themselves, seem to give up all hope, and grow reckless, as if Macbeth's words were ringing in their ears:. " If it were done, when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done quickly." They rattle op the four games in something like iO minutes^ and most likely the audit will appear as Q wins, 0 draws, 4 losses. Most people will admit that players of this stamp have often far, too nruch say in deciding a contest. My, opinion for many years has been, and is that any player, after losing three games in succession, should not play the fourth, or, if the fourth be played, it should not be counted: Three wins or three losses is surely sufficient to satisfy anyone. Of course, care must by all means be taken to foster and encourage the younger players : at the same time care should be taken not to damp the spirits of any of the other club members. — I am, etc., JAMBS MILNE.
