PEOBLEM 1888. ,
■ "Tommy Atkins" writes: — "Czar" thinks I should have apologised for giving 22 18 as a draw, but the apology should come from "Czar," seeing he tried ,to correct my play and failed. Hri blunders in saying I alter my var. 2 tc 3 8. My var. 2 was always 3 8, and the alteration comes later on. He again blunders by referring me to his 3 8 of September 6, as that refers to a different position altogether, as a perusal of my last week's play will probably have enlightened him by this time. In fact, "Czar" is all at sea on my play.
But if "Czar" is mixed, what must i think of Mr Mulvey, who gives his 3 8 as a new line for "Tommy." Let him examine my last week's play along with my play to follow in this, and he will learn all about his new line. He may expect a straight one from "Czar" next week about his "15 18 draw at once" ruove. To put Mr Mulvey and "Czar" straight, 1 submit the following, giving datesti wheie to find play, which will prove my win from previous play, and save your space. The order of Mr Mulvoy's and my play up to the twenty-second move is different. Mine is better, as his twelfth move, 9 5, is a losing move. The position in both % after twenty-second move is: Black men on 2, 4, 14, Icings 33, 26; White men on 11, 21, 29, kings 3, s— Black to play. Black, as already stated by me, can play here 26 22, or the alternative, 14 18. If the former then 3 8 gives "Czar's" move to "Tommy" of September 5 (and Mulvey' s new line). My reply to which is given in September 26; where Mr Mulvey will find what he asks for. "This play "Czar" tried to show was a draw, but failed, and it now stands good. If you play the alternative 14 18 (which. I now prefer) and then 3 8, you have my var 2 of October 3, corrected by Mr Mulvey and "Czar" on October 10, and correct play given by me on October 17, which now stands uninjured. If 3 7 instead of 3 8 after 14 18, then 26 22, and I give play at different times from August 30 to October 10 where I correct "Czar's" var. 4. I now claim to have proved the. win, and challenge anyone to show me a draw at any position in this play. ] also claim this play as original.— TOMMY ATKINS.
