CHRTSTOHURCH, October 23. A heavy spring shower fell an hour before work commenced, and made the track a little ilow. Record Reign, assisted over the last half df the journey by Miss Delaval, galloped a mile a"nd a-half in'2min 47^scc, all out, and pulled up lame in the off foreleg. Djin-Djin ' galloped about a mile and a-quarter, assisted by Scottish Minstrel, the last seven furlongs being covered in lmin 3'6sec. Dundas did half to three-quarter pacing. Huku, with "Whirlwind and Hawthorn as assistants, covered a mile and three-quarters in 3min 13sec, the gallop being a decidedly useful one. Malatua beat badly in a mile and a-quai'ter _ gallop, done in 2min 20isec. •Fulmen, with Derrett up, and assisted by Transport and Cherrystone, galloped a mile and a-half pleasingly .in 2min43sec. Paladin and Strathnairn went seven 'furlongs, the last five in lmin 4Eex:, keeping together, though the Stewards' Stakes -candidate had a bit the best of the spin, which was a good one. It was an impressive gallop.' Ideal cantered, while Jabber, Roller, and Renown walked — all looking well. Paladin ran brilliantly over five furlongs, covering the distance nicely in lmin 4see, the last half in 50seo. Twenty two-year-olds worked on the course proper after breakfast. Windwhistle and Golden Mere, the Saracen — ■ Psyche filly, Calibre, and Margor showed best in their respective divisions; while Menchikoff, Field Battery, Diplomat, Royal Artillery, and 'San Patricio (from Yald.hurst) all went well.
So far the' best gallops done at Ejccarton over a mile and a-half have been those recorded by Dundas, Strathnairn, Huku, Fulrnen, and Malatua, in that order.
October 26. The strongest work done this -morning was by Glenogle, who galloped six furlongs on the plough in lmin 19sec. Clandeboye went a mile in lmin 51£ eec; Malntua and Military, half a mile in 53sec. Spider aiid Hermpsa covered a mile, the last half in -54-see. The Spinner and Terrapin negotiated five furlongs hi lmin 7Jrsee. Paphos, Renown, paid Ideal were associaied together the last halfmile on the grass being done in 51isee, finishing in line, but not ridden out. Dundas and Benzoin covered the last half-mile of six furlongs in 51sec. Transport beat Warbeck over six furlongs in lmin 22sec. Calibre beat Peerage and Cavalry over lialf a mile in 52sec. St. Denis went four furlongs at a strong pace. Proposal liad a like mission. Materoa led Cherrystone by several lengths at the end of seven furlongs from a standing stari^ run in lmin 34Bee. Steady work was apportioned to Huku, "Miss Delaval, Skobeloff, Ismene, Field Rose, Formosan, Menschikoff, Cora Linn, Belligerent, and Goldspur. Paladin did a eound gallop on the cinders, and Strathnairn also moved along ,freely and well over two circuits of the same track. j October 27. It -was a capital morning for time-making, the track being in splendid condition and the wind favourable. Djin-Djin and Miss Delaval went a mile and a- quarter on the plough, the last mile being done in lmin 50^sec, both all out; Mies DVJlaval was a length ,in front. Dundas, with rather more than Cup weight, and Malatua, with probably 181b less, galloped a mile and-half in 2min 38 l-ssec. This was on inside of the grass, and so far is the fastest mile and ahalf this season, the track 'being much faster than heretofore. Both were ridden out and finished together, Malatua probably going the strongest. With the weights reversed the verdict would not have'been the same. Ideal and Renown slipped over six furlongs fast. Nihilist was sent a mile and a-quarter, St. Denis bringing him .home the last five furlongs. The Spinner and Terrapin were sent six furlongs, the last five being negotiated in lmin s£sec. Benzoin, covered the last four of six furlongs, in 50see. Fulinen and Maleroa covered a mile and a-quarter -in ,2min 14sec, the last mile in lmin 463 ec, Materoa slightly leading har companion and striding out more freely than yesterday. Derrett was on Fiilmen. Both were ridden out. Huku covered half a furlong short of two miles.in 3min 32sec, his first round taking 2min 18seo and the last 2min 32sec. Whirhvind, assisted m the first part by Sara and by "Hawthorn over the last mile, was given a useful gallop, the last rape and a-half taking 2min 44sec. Strathnairn shortly afterwards ran over the same distance at a good working pace, covering the first half-mile in 56see, and running the last round in 2min 33sec. Seab'rook went to bring him home, but was of no use, and he ran down the last half-mile comfortably in 53sec. Hermosa beat Spider over a six furlongs run from a. standing start in lmiu 18sec. Blazer with a flying start, slipped over five fnrlonps in lmin 3 2-ssec, -the last half-mile in 50seo. He was not fully extended. Proposal ran seven furlongs, Romanoff bringing her home. Cora Linn and Lady killer each did strong work. After Haria had galloped a mile and a-half, running over the last mile assisted by Skirmisher in lmiu 48s&->, Jind 'Hermosa had. 'nut in a useful $pin ovar" several furlongs, Osxiak and Sentry finished together, and knocked a second off Cora. Linn's time, covering the half-mile in 4Psec, The Jumper, Long Tom, and Cameo taking 3sec longer. Fashion and Whitney got over a mile together in lmin 45sec, the last half taking them 51isec. Ideal went twice round at half -to three-quarter pace. Sfc. Denis and Nihilist each did better than 'three-
quarter speed over about six furlongs. Strathnairn covered about two miles, running straight home over the last five furlongs. Renown and Paphos cantered a mile and a-half, and the former ran home the last halfmile in front in 50see. Transport and Cherrystone did six furlongs round the back in lmin 19' sec, the mare in front. A large number of others were working. New Zealand Cup quotations : — Tortulla is favourite at 3 to 1; Malatua, 4- to 1; others unchanged.
