THE GORE MEETING.
Edelweiss won the Oharlton Handicap in the? first furlong. Being smai'o away from the mark, whilst the others hung, the Indolence mare won all the way, and was pulling jup before reaching the pose. Plotter's win an the Selling Race was -alto of the easiest description. For onoe in a way the plain iCatesby gelding took <the fancy to gallop. Mason, rider of Letty, Avas disqualified for ithree months for interfering" with Picbs't. jGlenelg began slowly in the (Spring .Handicap, but had closed on Abercrombie and Black Pool at the home turn, snd after Black Pool: l^ad .surrendered, a fine finish between (the other (pair found Glenelg winning by a aieck in the 'fair 'time of 2min Isec. Glenelg' s .gallop a l fc Wingakii evidently did him good. I had the good luck 'to pick Southerly Buster for the lluidlcs in any -final lips, and as he ( paid £12 7s this dividend brought (my foljower§*well home for the day. I hea<r that it ' .was not a true run race. A loose dog interfered with one or two of the liors.es at the ibaok of the course. From what I can make iou't Pioneer suffered from thi& interference. All the game. Southerly Butter shaped pretty well. He is only a ..novice, may rise tv •bettor company before long. The Trot led to ian inquiry 'by the stewards anr 1 , they disqualified Cowboy, with Pringle (his rider) and Mr D. A. Paterson (owner) for fHj;: months. ,The original allegato*u against Cowboy was that 'he must have been "dead" at Tahuna. stewards asked the owner to let them *ry (Cowboy 'in harness, seeing .that dt was a .harness race-that. he haped "badly in at , Tahuna. The owner objected, fou't was willing, I understand, to allow Cowboy, to be trie"d at Tahuna. I can see the force in the contention on the owner's part that it would be faireir to try the horse ton 'the —track where he shapsd badly; bift I prefer not to give an opinion on the merits of the case until the appeal has been before the association. Madame Pedro, daughter of Don Pedro, won the District Hack Kace ||rom end to end; Edelweiss easily carried ier penalty in this Flying, neither of her opponents being fast enough to trouble her ; and the Rou3er gelding, Comrade, made the Mile Tixyt a certainty from the jump off. Jimmy, the favouriie, stuck at the post when the Biell sounded. Two piotests were lodged on the gecond day, but neither .-nas upheld. 'There was in neither case, we 'think, gays the Standard, much ground for protesting. It "was alleged against the rider of Vixen in the [Farmers' Plate that he bored his mount Against Mercury, allowed Waimea to winn The three horses finished in the order in ivhich they started, one never having passed the other, co that the likelihood of Mercury oeing interfered -with was remote. The other
was against George L., winner of the Twomile Trot. It was alleged 'that his form was inoonsi.-tent with l that shown on the first day. The protest, however, Avas withdrawn. Abercrombie was the most successful of the fiat racers, securing two wins during the day, his rider (M'Comb) steering no fewer than six mounts to victory during tho meeting. Glenelg was rather unfortunate in getting away badly in the big race, as the relative positions of the two leading horses at the finish inclined one to the opinion that 'the positions would have been very nearly yeversed had ho and Abercrombie got away to'gs'ther. The Hiu-dle Race was again a fine race. Southerly Buster, in .spite of his comfortable win the previous day, was not greatly fancied, and stood to pay the respectable dividend of £8 odd. Waikaia and Pip} were the two favourites, but were not in it, 'an loxciting fini&h being fought ou'L between 'Pioneer and Southerly Buster, the former 'winning by .about a length, and paying the substantial dividend of £9 odd.
