Dunedin v. Port Chalmers and Peninsula. — • This interesting contest is to take place on. Wednesday next, September 19, at Nelson's Hotel, Portobello. The Port and Peninsula, with the veteran Mr 11. Montgomery at their head, can muster a bjg team, and Dunedin, will require to muster all available strength to meet them. Town players will leave by drags from Mr F. Hilhker's saloon, Princes street, at 6.15 sharp. Entries will be received by Mr Hilliker up to the 15th. Drag fare, 2s. There will be room for all, as the Port-Peninsula cart muster 40_ players if necessary. Harry Freedman. — The Pittsburg ChronicleTelegraph says : " The opinion has been freely; expressed by local players that Mr Freedman is a living reminder of ' Jirnmie ' Heed as an. exponent of the game. His style of play, stiong on the end, and general all-round ability, dc finuch to strengthen the opinion. The plajers ox Pittsbuig know a strong checkerisfe when they meet one. ' "It is probable," saict or.c enthusiast, " the championship of the world will not be decided by Barker ancl Jordan, but the winner of that match will have to cross swords with Fieedman." There is no question about Mr Freedman' s ability. Tha same paper says: — Freedman' s visit to M'Keelporr was particularly gratifying. He won 65 games, lost one to Mr J. C. Chambers, and ia were drawn. Among the competitors was MiAnthony Dean, the man frae Airdrie, who was an intimate of the great John Drummond. Mr Dean secured a draw against Mr Freedman. Mr R. W. Patterson was the honoured guest. Play took place in the parlours of the Hotel White, and a. large assembly greeted the quick moving of the visitor with a responsive approval. Freedman plays an excellent game at chess, anct\recently defeated Sutton, the Pittsburg champion, ancl M'Cutcheon, a. player on the American, international team of two years ago.
