The ordinary monthly meeting cf the Bruce County Council, held yesterday at -Milton, wad attended by Crs W, Noble (chairman), 3. M. Bcgg, H. M. Driver, AY. Hcwitson, "VV. Crane, G-. 'x. MarKn, J Mi 2- a therford, and P. Haggart. A DEPUTATION. Messrs R. F. Smaill, John Dallas, and P. Uutherford waited on the council ia suppoil of a petition for a bndgo over the Ciulha at Haitangata. Mr .Smaill, on behalf of tlie deputation, said thai the settleis mteiested had foubscribed i'SC 2d towards the cost oi & bridge, ■which they urged should be erected instead ox making repairs to the punt. Cr jttutneriord said that at the previous meeting it v>as decided to aok the latepayers , -what assistance they would give the council m this matter. Seeing that a Government subsidy of £1000 had been obtained, and that xhe bfidge was actually requncd, he thought thai the eoiuicil should pioceed at once with the erection of the bridge. He moved — "lh?.t tenders be called for the erection of the Kai-ta-igata bridge. Cr Haggaii. .seconded the motion. '2he Chairman said that the council had gone to far in this, mailer to draw back. They had gone to the expense oi boiii'g ttie ground fo.the piles and had plans prepared. Cr Bcgg complained that Balmoral Ridir.g had recently had to pay about .£6OO for a biidge of their own, and now they were called on to bear their share of a big bridge that was not •worth sixpence to them. Nelson) repoited as follows . — The county roads are all 11- a fair condition for ti-aflic, the continued diy weather having a good effect in levelling rhe ruts. The contract on the Clarendon-Beiwici read is now complete, and the road Io the danj- factory at Taien •Beach ia nearly finished, but'- it cannot be opened until the fencing is complete. The contracts for the supply of maintenance metal at Hillend and Manuka Creek roads are finished, and the stone will be put down as soon sts bioken. The work of cleaning out the Matau drains through descent estate will fooii be finished. The inspector also reported that he had examined this load 111 company with Cr Haggart, and found that the surveyor had altered it from the beach on to llio edge of the terraces, as part of the original road was covered by the sea at full tide. The only work of a Beiious nature was a bridge over the YVarigaloa Creek, estimated to cost £6D. Tlie road crossed se\eral gullies, and to put pipe culveits in would cost about £50. Mr Nelson also reported that he had e::nmined the road and bank near Berwick, and had to rexaort that the local authorities had erected a bank on the Taieri side of the river, and that during the lasl ride in the river the watoi overflowed on the Biuce side. It would be necessary to repair the banks where the water overflowed. The receipts for the month amounted to £182 11s Bd, and the expenditure to £373 14s. — Adopted. COEKE3PONDENCE. The Chief Siuveyor wrote enclosing a plan of road to be clo:-ccl in blocks 11, 111, VI, XI, and XIII, HiJlcnd; block 111, Waitahuna East district; and block XVII, Balclutha district, and asking the council to approve of the same so that the loads might be gazetted closed under "The Land for Settlements Act, Amendment Act, 1895. ' — It was decided to take the nece&s?.iy steps, co close the road mentioned. Mr James Allen, M H R,. wrote slating that le hod wailed upon tlie Minister with a copy >f the council's re^o'uttoi renaming the Ki'i.angata C*eak, and was hopeful that the two

local bodies — the Bruce County Council and thi Kaitangata Borough Council — had now come to a satisfactory arrangement about tho matter. — Received. Tho Knapdale Road Boaid wrote asking a number of legal questions legarding the spreading of gorse on public reads and adjoining lands. — The letter was leceived. Joseph Ciark, Lovell's Flat, wrote asking permission to put a pipe drain across the Main load to drain his land. — Agreed to, snbject io the approval of the inspector. GXENEPvAL. John Muir was granted a slaughtering license for a yard in section 8, block IV, Noith Molynenx district. The chairman and Cr Martin were appointed to maks arrangements with Mr W. Dunne for a supply of road metal from his quariy. Thomas Sinclair was granted a slaughtciing license for a section in Bamego settlement. The following tenders were accepted: — Formation of road at Pukepito, A. Cariulhers, £26 16? 6d; formation or Clarendon-Berwick load, J. Ferguson, jC6i 10s; formation of road at Bush quarry (Fairfax^, D. Tweadie, £60 30s; formation ot road at Akatore, Anderson and Brown, £87 10s. On the motion ol Cr Hewitson, it was decided to call for tenders for gravelling 20 chains at Elliott's, on the Lakeside load. It was decided to gravel 100 chains of the load iiom Wangaloa to Kaitangata. Cr Rutherford announced at the close cf the nieetmg that as lie was about io take up his residence outside the district he would be compelled to hand in his resignation as a meinbrr. He, was corry io leave the council, nii<? valued the friendships he had made at the council table — The Chairman expressed his legret that Cr Rutherford was leaving them, and said that he had ba;n a capital member for liichclutha and Matuu "Riding. — Several othev councillors exprps.sed their good, fpelingtowards Mi Rutb.eri.ord, and regretted that bo found it necessprj- to send in his resignation — The Chairman then read out Mr Rutherford'^ resignation, which. was formally received.
