NOTES FROM THE MINING JOURNAL. WELLINGTON, August 31.
The following items are from the Mining Journal : — The town clerk at Hampden (Otago), who made a second application for the loan of bormg rods for the purpose of boring for coal in the vicinity of Hampdon, lias been informed that
the Mines department has no boring rods available which are suitable ■'for boring for coal. A voucher for £3 17s 10d has been passed for payment to enable the Gabriels Gully Quartz Reef Prospecting Association at Blue Spur, in the Tuapeka County (Otago) to pay off the liabilities owing. The secretary, in applying^ for ths balance of the subsidy, slated that nearly £1000 had been spent by the association in prospecting. The works had been left complete, so that another party would be able to start prospecting at any future time, and particulais of the woik done could be obtained from the inspector of mines, Dunedin. A communication has besn received from Mr J. A. Al'Fsdgeon, of Dimdas (Tasmania), who states that he has hr.d a large experience in tin mining, with reference to the deposits at Stewart Island. Mr, M/Fadgeon has been, iufoimcd that the deposits are veinstone in the southern part of the Remarkablee, and alluvial in the. various creeks 1 draining from the same. The vein deposits _are not now worked because of their improutab'leness. The alluvial deposits are T vorked on ? small scale by Messrs Thompson Bios, at Half-moon Bay. .but these deposits axe neither of great depth nor are they extei-sive, and do not warrant much expenditure, in their development. There is an abundant supply of timber and water available on Stewart Island. An objection to the granting of a prosiDecting license to Thomas Garland on a gravel reserve at Moeiaki, near the Shag Rivet, has been received iiom Mrs Elizabeth "Russell, of Inch Valley, on Ilia ground of the liability of her stock being destroyed through ground being left uniencod, and dr-mcige to, her property on account of digging being carried on so close to her house, and requesting the Minister to ■withhold his consent to the granting of the license. Mrs Russell has been infoimed that tho license was consented to, and returned to the commissioner of Crown lands at Duncdra four days prior to the receipt of her letter, and that the commissioner, when forwarding the license for consent, hud informed the Minister of Mrs Russell's objection, which was however overruled af!;er hearing argument of cotnsel on her behalf.
