Notes from Reefton.
(Fbom Gor Own Correspondent/) RBEFTON, September 2. The following returns are reported: Kerwan's Reward Company, 2850z gold from 209 tons of stone (clean .up) ; Buller dredge, 12oz 16dwt for 125 hours. THE WEALTH OF PRESERVATION. "We gave some particulars a few days ago concerning the coal area at Preservation Inlet, which had been discovered by Messrs M'Queen and Rogers for the Outred Syndicate <pf Tirnaru. Samples of coal which were brought to Duncdii have been analysed, with very satisfactory results. The prospects of their coal discoveiy are considered of a highly favourable nature. There are large quantities of coal in sight, and Messrs M'Queen and Rogeis are sanguine that there is a possibility of the coal mining industiy at Preservation Inlet rivalling that of Westport. Good judges express the opinion that tho samples of coal shown in Dunedin are equal to the best that is produced in any other pavt of the colony. While Messrs M'Queen and Rogers and the Ovitred Syndicate are to be congiatulated on their good fortune in seeming an apparently valuable coal property, it appears that their persistent prospecting is likely to receive an even greater reward. We have been shown samples of gold from a dredging area taken up on behalf of the same syndicate. The returns fiom the wash from the claim, which has been tested, have been excellent. The Rogers Syndicate, which comprises Dunedin gentlemen, has also taker 1 up a large area adjoining, and this has been reported upon most favourably. It is "too soon yet to. speak with any certainty, but indications so far go to show that dredging is likely to do well at Preservation Inlet,
