OAMARU, Monday.

Aii evening spent at Miss Dielil's pianoforte recital, assured me that the music-loving public of this town is as enthusiastic as ever. It was Miss Diehl's first concert, and the nail was quite full. The pieces and items were artistically rendered. Miss Gifrord's voice ■was not quite what it should havobeen owing to a bad cold. Miss Diehl t/ovb a block skirt and very preLfcy pink blouse stylishly tritr.raed with narrow black velvet : Mies 15. Hood, white costume trimmed v^th pale blue silk; Miss Inglis, black co&trime trimmed with ratin and passementerie trimmings ; Miss Giffcrd, shaded silk blouse with fichu cf beautiful lace, and cream lace falling from elbow sleeves.

The Royal Manchester Unity Lodge held their annual ball in the Theatre Hoyal on the 26th ult., -when about GO coui^lcs too'c part in the proceedings. Bro. Coaper acted as M.C. in his efficient style, while the catering was in the hands of Mr Meyers, the table decorations being left to Mrs Meyers. The colouring was in red, white, and blue. A photograph of the tables was taken by limelight. A presentation was made by Sergeant-major Macpherpon to Bros. Heron and Thomas, v\lio were the recipients of a lovely picture eoch. Songs were contributed by Messrs Mc.«s, Proctor, and others. Music was supplied by Meldrum Bros and Mi Pheloung' (cornet).

The grand march was led off by Bro. Heron and Miss B'eron, who wore a very neat and pretty cashmere costume trimmed with satin ribbons and chiffon ; Miss Chape, wore a pretty pink costume trimmed with pink satin of deeper shade, chiffon and net ; Miss Fereus, pple blue costume, nun's veiling, ptiff gleeves, drape of lacs back aud front, heading of blue satin forming the yoke ; Miss Moilison, a debutante, wore a canary-coloured costume trimmed with various rows of black velvet, close-fitting gathered sleeves with rows of black velvet alternately, and ruche of black lace finishing the neck anc" sleeves ; Miss Grant, pink costume, white satin belt and ribbons at side, fichu cf white Liberty silk edged with frills of tame ; Miss Grenf ell, pretty pink costume trimmed with black velvet and lace, wreath of red roses ; Miss Sinclair, black velvet, trimmed with lace and red poppies; Miss Jenkins, beautiful cos-fume of pale blue trimmed with white silk ; Miss Emslie, white muslin, white satin bows and lace trimmings catighl with psste buckleo ; Mift> Reid, white costume, yoke and pleeves of ■w hite satin trimmed with chiffon ; Miss Bee, lovely costume of wliita silk, bodice and sleeves covered with not studded with sequins and garnishinpfs oi silver papsementerie : Miss Dick, black skirt and corsage, yoke and sleeves of amber satin, sleevas co-.ered with black transparent lace, edgings of black chiffon ; Miss Sidon, white costume trimmed with frills edged with Valenciennes lace ; Miss Grey (Pukeuri), cream, costume, satin trimmings) ; Mips P. Jenkins, white cost-ame, satin and lace trimmings, belt aud streamers of white satin and wreaths of poppies.

On the 2?ta and 28th ult. the Ancelon Drfimatic Co. (Mr W. Bentley) opened their farewell season here. The audiences on all occasions were large. Among those in the dress circle I noticed Mrs St. John "Buckley, Mrs Bradley, Mrs Davis, Mrs Waddell, Mrs Steenson, Mrs "Willnmson, Misses Roberts, Adair, Morton Gilchrist. and Lamont, Mrs Brown, Mrs Potter, and Mrs Mitchell. •j -
