AHAURA,
June 21. — Good progress is being made with the construction of the pontoons for the vaiious dredging claims in this neighbourhood. 'Mr Jay, who has secured the contract for the construction of the pontoons for the Ahaura Gold Dredging Company, has already made a start at his work, and in the course of a few weeks these and other portions on the Ahaura River will be well under way.
At the Caledonia Creek, some few miles west of Ahaura, some four or five claims have been taken up, one of which has been floated into a company known as the Shellback Gold Dredging Company. It was floated by Messrs Doogan and Co., of Greymouth, and Mr E. Roberts, of Dunedin, has been appointed engineer. The capital of this company is £10,000, and the property is considered to be an exceptionally good one.
There are a good many miners working round aboiit Ahaura in the neighbouring hills and gullies, but owing to the late dry weather work has been slightly hindered. A sluicing claim on the north bank of the Ahaura River changed hands a few v^eeks ago for £800. The claim has been working foi many years, yielding large returns,- and it is to be hoped it will con-
tinue to do so, and the purchaser thus be rewarded for his enterprise.
