SUICIDE AT CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, May 3.
A sensation waf caused in the city this morning when it was reported that Mr David S. Bowman, fqrmerly • a well-known auctioneer, and latterly a pawnbroker, had been found dead in an outhouse at the rear of his residence at Papanui with a bullet wound over his right ear. A loaded .six-chambered revolver was found under his light hand, two chambers having been discharged. It is supposed that the cause of his act was financial troubles. He had offered at a private meeting of his creditors a composition of 10s in the £, but- his offer was rejected. He threatened that if forced into the Bankruptcy Court he would destroy himself, but no notice was taken of his threat.
At -the inquest a verdict of " Suicide while temporarily insane" was returned. The evidence showed that deceased had been despondent for some time in consequence of the involved condition of his financial affairs. He had said that he would never submit to being made a bankrupt.
