Notes from Lyell.
{From Our Own Correspondent.) LYELL, April. 27. The Mine Manager of the Alpine reports :— • The contractors have driven No. 7 level ahead north for a further distance of 10ft, making a total extension of 100 ft. On Tuesday last small irregular boulders of quartz, containing gold, were struck on the foofcwall side of the drive, and a small crosscut wa3 then put in for a distance of 7ft, which developed a reef 2ft wide in the top and broken in the bottom. The level is now being driven in order to catch the same formation further ahead. The winze in the south end of No. 11 level has been suijk a further distance of 10ft, making a total depth of 62ft. The reef has been about sft wide, and running very flat, but yesterday another body of stone, lying almost vertical, was met in the hanging-wall, which we have not yet been able to -break into. During the month 72 tons of stone have been cent to the battery.
