TRADES AND LABOUR. THE LINOTYPE DISPUTE.
WELLINGTON, April 24. The Conciliation Board's -recommendations in the linotype dispute were made;. known to-day. The principal jzecommendations .are : That three classes of workers be recognised — viz., efficient ; operators, ' probationers, and apprentices to the com- 1 .posing trade generally, including operating on linotype machines. -That time and' piecework be s recognised in the working of ; machines. That no operator shall be deemed efficient unless he shall have ob-J tamed a speeji of 4000 ens an hour in three months, 5000 in six months,. 6ooo' in,! eight months, and 6500 in 15- months. The agreement to be for a period of , two years from the^ 4th May. , DISPUTE IN THE MILLING TRADE. 'A reference of an industrial dispute between the XTnited Millers, Engine-drivers, and*- Mill Employees of Otago Industrial Union of Workers and the Master Millers of- Otago has been filed with the clerk of awards. Tha following is a statement of the wages and conditions of labour^ asked for by the union : — 1. A day's work shall consist of eight hours. 2. A half-holiday shall' be observed from 12 o'clock neon on Saturdays. 3. All work done exceeding eight hours in any 24 hours shall be deemed to be overtime, and shall be paid for as follows : — Overtime Rates. 4. Tinie-and.-a-quarter shall he paid for the first two* hours ; time-and-a-half 'for the -second two hours ; after the second two hour 3, double time shall he paid. All work done on Sundays and oh holidays shall be ,paid for at the rate of double time. ' Holidays. / 5. The following days shall b& observed as holidays: — New Year's Day and January' •2>r~ Good Friday, Easter Monday, The Sovereign's Birthday, Labour Day, and Christmas Day. Boys or Apprentices.
