THE MAIDEN'S CHOICE. Down by the water lilies
A fair young lassie sat, A-dreaming of her -lovers —
Comp?.ring this with that! Now of the- merry black eyes, Then of the bonnie -blue; Her choice, 'twas- Hal one moment, The next, 'twas .gallant Hugh' ! The' winds crept slyly round her, Kissing her velvet cheek; And the stream with her airy shadow
Was playing hide and seek. O'er her bright curls in the sunbeams
A lark sang sweet and clear; And the bees their old, old love song.-
Were murmuring in her. ear.
The maid look'd o'er the meadow, Where the white-frill'd daisies grewj And this way came young Harry, And that way gallant Hugh. And or ever the blushing dreamer
Could hide her from their sight, Young Harry had seized her left hand,
And Hugh, lie clasped her right. All by the water lilies
Each wooed with heart and voice, Till the fair head was bewildered,
And could not make a choice; For O so gay was Harry, And O so brave was Hugh; When both were so well-favour' d,
What could a poor lass do? April, 1900.
