This meeting had to bo postponed a day on account of lain. It opened with a surprise in the Maiden Hurdles. The outsider Dubious was always well up to the fore, and Hotu, by his penalty, gave him an extia chance, which he made the mo-t of, and got the judge's verJicl by 3 bare half-Jengtli, Sudor a bad third. In the Open Hurdle Race Hotu was in front for s-ix furlonga, but his bad fencing affected his pace, for he kept losing a couple of lengths at each hurdle. About three furlongs from home Euei'ari-* assumed command, and though all the other i were undei punishment they could not ppmoarh him. It is estimated that al *j £1500 was taken out of the ring over the oet d'Eau hor.-e's success, and one firm it, leported to have had to pjiy out elo?e on £600. The starting price (£l2) was a staggerer to the layers, especially a^ Waterford had been bruite-J about as a good thing a few clays previous to the meeting, and was strongl3 r backed in town on the day the races were poslvjoncd. Waterford was bred by_Mr S. Jl. Gollan, and is by Jet d'Eau from Forlorn Hope, a i!a 7 f-«?ter to Happy "Land, the dam of Hova. W. Davies picked the youngster out of a batch, being allowed his pick for 50gs. He is a three-year-old, and was very plain when nrst brought to the Hutl last winter; m fact, he )s far from a handsome hoipe at the present lime. His long ear.3 and rather lorqo head detract a good deal from his appeal unco, but he ib stoutly built and will be nble to master weight. This was Waterford'* f-econd appearance in puVic.
