THE MANIOTOTO MEETING,

Racing ot Naseby was being carried on by such good men a^ Mr Indcr, Mv Mathias, Mr Foster, and Mr Beck when T first beaan as a turf scribe in 1879. The Mount Ida Cup that voar was practically a match between Rocket 10.12 and Sailor Boy 10.6, lbs latter winning. Both these horses afterwards won races on metropolitan courses. From that day to the present there has always been an autumn race meeting in the district. The Naseby Cup wos established in lE9O. and was won by Billy's one daughter, Disappointment. The following- list shows the winners of this race : — Tun Naseby Cup. Miss Mack had 10.0 in 1892. She met De Trop 8.7, Knickerbocker Sam 7.12, and Fable 7.9, and won easily by a length. There were no totolisator investments! on tbe race in Rebec's year. That is why the blank appears in the dividend column. The reason of there being no belling was that there were only two starters, the other one being Dun Joseph 8.13, who ; it will be seen, never won the Naseby Cup, though one of the best of the district horses of his doy. This year, though the weather proved disagreeable— threatening overhead, and soft under foot on the first day and a drencher on the second — the totalisator in-vrt-lmenls, as handled by Messrs Mason and Roberts, reached a record, in witness whereof I present a statement showing Lhe totals in successive yeavs since 1890: — 1 ; 90. £1600; 1891. £1799; 1692, £1994; 1893, £2065; 1894, £2279; 1895, £1991; 1596, £1721; 1897, £1519; 1898, £1173; 1699. £2182; and this year il was £?.S9I. The meeting seems to have been very well managed. Mr M'Skimming seldom makes a mistake in his starting ; MiHall's handicapping was satisfactory; and Mr F. W. Jnder, as secretary, proved to be the right man in the right place. The particulars appended are gleaned mainly from the Mount Ida Chronicle's report :—ln: — In the Maiden Handicap. Lady Rule got away best, and Jtafferly was left. At half-distance all wore together. With a quarter to go Lady Rule drew away for an ea^y win. Muscovite hung at the post in the Cup, but after going half a mile he passed all but Edelweiss. Upon her ho could make no impression, but he kept her galloping, and she won by very little. Maniac took a long time to settle down in the Trot ; hence he just failed to catch Linneltc. Visionary and Felina raced neck and ueck

for half a mile in the Welter Handicap, and, never fairly separated, they came quite together at the finish, a dead hent being declared. The verdict met with general approval. Lady Rule seemed to have very little to spare in the Selling Race. She was bought in at £15. Maniac made the District Trot a one-horse race. Tufto made the pace in the Hack Race, but could not see it out, and Old Sport won as he liked. Lord Rule dropped out of the District Handicap almost from the fall of the flag, and Beauclerc failed to stay. Cannonball won by a. couple of lengths, Feline being the one th'it he had to beat. On the second day Cannonball made the j>ace to the straight in the Flying, but Visionary caught him, and won by a length. Maniac, steadily ridden by Grant, had something to spore at the end of the Trot. Edelweiss was nob disEfiMced by her defeat in the Jockey Club Handicap. She is only a little mare, and 10.10 in the mud is a he;uy burden. Visionary won by a length, and Edelweiss was only a length behind Muscovite in a good contest. Tufto cut out the running in the Novel Handicap, but again failed to stay, and Patrol had a pretty easy win. He was bought in at £10. Ebone.-s won the Mile Trot from end to end. Edelweiss, in the President's Handicap, waited on the others till near home, and then pipped Beauclerc without very much difficulty. Patron was led by Realistic till a quarter from home, and then the hitter's wind gave out. Ipcu ing Patron to paddle home by a length and pay a good dividend. Beauclere, who led all the way in the Farewell, was the outsider of the party.
