WAIRIO.

January 22.— The weather during the past week proved veiy changeable, not at all ideal summer weather. Crops are looking Al, and, to judge by present appearances, the threshing yields will be quite up to those of former years. Turnips are, on most farms, above ground, and on all sides I hear sad tales of the depredations committed by "fly" and small bird. Carting coal appears to be the order of the day with the greater number of farmers. Races. — Our annual race meeting took place last Wednesday, and was an undoubted success. The day, contrary to early appearances, turned out beautifully fine, and as a result the attendance was large. The promptitude with which the races were got off called forth the commendation of all. If the club could only succeed in getting the Railway department to issne tickets at excursion rates for that day, I feel sure our meeting would become the most popular in Southland. Mrs G-riffen (Nightcaps) had the licensed booth and luncheon, and Mr J. Taylor (Otautau) the fruit stall, etc. The following are the results: — Handicap Hurdle Race. — W. Baird's Clinker 1, T. G. Lillicronia's Ulysses 2. Maiden Plate.— R. Russell's Strong Bow 1, W. Hazlett's Fawn Webster 2. Wairio Cup.— Ellis Bros.' Decoy 1, J. Tennant's C-lenelg 2. Welter Handicap.— J. Sharp's Zillah 1, L. D. O'Toole's Seabreeze 2. Handicap Trot. — J. Davies's Kohuru 1, F. Finnigan's Garry owen 2. Flying Handicap. — J. Sharp's Zillah 1, Ellis Bros.' Decoy 2. Hack Race Handicap. — Syrian 1, F. M'Kay's Molly Mullaney 2. I was very sorry to notice on the course, unable to walk without the aid of a stick, our popular president, Mr JN. Bates, his injuries being the result of a kick from a horse. We all wish him a speedy recovery. Signs of Advancement. — Our new storekeeper, Mr D. C. M'Kenzie, has, I see, commenced operations. I wish him every success. Our new salcyards are well under way, the siiccessful tenderer, Mr W. Andrews, not allowing the grass to grow under his feet.
