WAIKAIA.

January 8. — The annual Caledonian sports were held on New Year's Day, the weather being fine, but very windy. The various events .were well contested, but fixe attendance was not quite so good as usual. Some of the ladies took advantage of the sports to sell the colours for the benefit of the patriotic fund, and realised a good few pounds. Mr Colin Robertson likewise went round with the hat. and got a few pounds. There was a concert "and dance in the evening, which was fairly good, financially- and otherwise. Patriotic Fund. — A meeting was held in Bell's Hall to elect a committee to arrange for a concert and dance for the benefit of the patriotic fund, to be held on the 19th Januaiy, the night of the Waikaia Hack Race meeting. ", A good . strong committee was chosen, and I think if we have favourable weather ws should realise a goodly sum. Subscription lists have been given out to all the business people, and some of them show very well, so I think oil things considered, we shall be able to Tnalce up a very respectable sum. ' Angling. — Some fairly good baskets have been made during the last fortnight, Mr A. M'lvor made a record for large fish, taking tluee beauties, one lllb, one 9Mb, and one 7]slb, besides a nice basket of smaller ones; Messrs Christie Brothers have had some g,ood baskets of fine fish, ranging from 3lb to 51b; Mr M. Stevenson likewise caught six beauties, from 31b up to 61b in weight; Mr W. Martin caught ten fish weighing 19lb and several other good catches have been made. I am afraid we shall soon have our river spoiled for fishing, as the Nugget dredge is expectad to make a start in about three weeks. Dredging. — Pegging out is still the order of the day, and I expect if the Nugget turns out well we shall soon have some more dredges under way. The Dome Creek dredge is about to start building the pontoons. Some of the timber is on the grotuid. and they expect to have the dredge completed and ready for work in about four months.
