DUNEDIN AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB. ANNUAL SPORTS.
, The fifteenth annual .sports meeting protoioted by the Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club •-was held on the Carisbrook ground on Saturday afternoon. The afternoon was raw and 'cold, and when the bell rang for the first event the attendance was decidedly meagre. Later on, however, a marked improvement was noticeable, and a fair number of ladies occupied seats in the grand stand. Altogether there must have been nearly 1000 present. The various events were got off punctually by the committee, and the last was only about a quarter of an hour behind the hour fixed. The Maiden Race (120 yds) brought out nine competitors, and the' winner turned up in A. E. Bragg, who was run very close by another young athlete, H. T>. Thomson. The firstnamed also annexed the 100 yds, and cut out the distance in the very fair time of llsec. In the hammer-throwing, Martin conceded 20ft to Doull, the only other competitor, and then threw 103 ft 4in, beating the standard by 3ft 4in. The long jump was a gift to Brownlee, who covered 19ft 6in. For the Half-mile Flat Race about a dozen had entered, but only five started. The scratch men — Bennott and Olson — caught the others entering the straight ; but Martin had still a spurt left, and won rather easily. It was generally expected that Cuff, would pull.off the 250 yds Championship, but. Aldridge . sprang away from the mark with, a lead tha,t was worth three or four yards, and Cuff., who. ran a good race, could not cut down thJ6 handicap. Lochhead, who had 75yds in .the One Mile Flat Handicap, made the paco bo warm that only Okon and King were left in at the last lap. The winner exhausted himself rather badly, not being in the best of condition. The time was about 12sec more than the standard — a fairly good performance for a young athlete. Brownlee' s handicap put him out of the high jump. Thomson, who was in raUh;ig form, got up to sft 3£in, and when Brownlec had to add Bin on to that, the feit was too much for him. After a half-hearted attempt, he gave it best. W. F. Bennett ran v c 1 in the Two-mile Flat, and C. A. Cuff nnc in firstly in the 220 yds Handicap and the 440 yds Ladies' Bracelet.
