GIBSON'S CATTLE BRAND.

A SOUTHLAND HERD OPERATED

Much has been heard lately of a new method of branding" cattle that will obviate the cruelty of the hot -iron process, and alsothe serious damage to the hide involved. It hardly seems credible, but it is nevertheless a fact that the loss sustained by Australia and New Zealand, owing to the action of the firebrand on the hide amounts to hundreds of thousands of pounds per annum, as the -part operated upon is rendered quite useless for manufacturing purposes, besides which, ow- j ing to its position, the removal of the part results in serious waste. " Gibson's Patent ! Liquid Brand," which it is confidently I claimed by the inventor will not, only .avert ! this great loss, but will sfcve the 'unfortunate cattle from acute pain, is now being introduced into Southland by the well-known firm of Messrs J. G. ~Ward and "Co., and the first lot of cattle operated upon was on view at the Wallacetown saleyards last week. Itjj comprised a mob of 46 head from the farm of Mr Robert Brown, jun,, of the Myross district, some having been marked a month ago, and the others ten days since, the implement ' used to apply the liquid being an ordinary sheep brand, sin by 4in. Mr Brown did the work single-handed, and had no TOOfe trouble than in branding sheep, the performance being quick and painless. The effeot of the liquid is to remove the hair, which will not grow again; thus leaving a clear impression on jhe hide. Farmers pnd dealers who were at the sale inspected the cattle with much interest, and favourably commented on the new process, whicli in addition to its other great advantages is, comparatively speaking, inexpensive. Mr Brown is highly pleased with the Gibson brand, and there is no doubt, now it is on the market that it won't be long before all stockowners use it." It is already coming into vogue in Australia, and the time will soon arrive when its use will '. be universal, for the enhanced price of the hide is bound to toll. — Southland News. !
