Romareka Notes. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — I notice irom tim? to time fragments by a contributor on various subjects, greatly to the amusement of Cannibal Bay, Seafiekl, and Rcmareka settlers. Your contributor, as a visitor to this locality, indulges to a considerable extent in giving free advice to the School Committee. Now that body is perfectly able to look after its own duties satisfactorily and well, and also give a helping hand towards the beard's small allowance — viz., £9 yearly, a sum that a quaint little Bungah hut would take in its erection and thatching stuff; and wilTi this small sum they are doing more towards the school and its surroundings than some one who could be mentioned did with double the money. Well, what a loss this district has sufiered that it had not one to look after th& welfare of the school two years ago, when there was a special grant of £10 given for metalling and beautifying the surroundings of the school. " What work has been done with this sum I know not,- but -this much I could see, that a £5-note would handsomely pay for the few loads of clay and rotten rock laid down." Foh! this is so patent to me that the wayfaring man, though a fool, could not err in giving his opinion. I see from your issue of the 28th ult. that Mr Campbell has a large^wooden building — yes, roofed with corrugated ircj>, insured, I am told, for the small sum of £200 against fire,- yet from the top of a hill it must look ptiuy; also a. laree rowahed, capable of

holding 10 stalled cattle-, with a large garden close to the cowshed, no doubt for the lmrpose of being convenient in more ways than one. I was through this garden, and I may tell you, for the sake of friendship, it isi well fenced and wire-netted, and laid out with over 100 fruit trees, some of them I understand 10 years old. There is also, I noticed, in front of Mr Campbell's house a nice well-kept flower garden and ornamental trees, such as would do credit to any civilised place. And, just in conclusion, I have no doubt should you, Mr Editor, at any time during the shooting season visit, along with other visitors, this locality you will receive from Mr Campbell the l.cspitilify that is so chaiacteristic of Hrp«daibane Highlandi'ie — I am, etc., ONE "WHO KNOWS.
