LATE MINING.

(Continutd from pvge 22. \

BALD HILL FLAT FREEHOLD GOLD DREDGING COMPANY.

Our Cromwell correspondent telegTphs: — Business in shares is still quiet. Several claims have been peggerl off during the last day or two.

The Mataura Ensign states that a Gore resident sold a half-interest in a claim on the Mataura River for £300.

The manager of the Undaunted Gold Mining Company, Orepuki, reports having washed up from 'the driving claim, the result being 68oz for the month. The main drive has been extended another 100 ft and cross-drives put in. The total amount of wash put through was about 100 yds for an average of nearly threequarters of an ounce to the yard. The greater part of the dead work on this claim is now completed.

The Clutha Free Press says: — On Friday Mr Rawlins, M.H.R., and Messrs Magnus (Alexandra) drove- to Port Molyneux and pegged off a considerable portion of the Molyneux Bay, extending to the banks of the river. It is said that the party named has " jumped " the ground which Messrs Drysdale and Robertson were granted permission to dredge by the Clutha River Board at last meeting.

All applications for prospecting dredging licenses in the Grey and other rivers were (with one exception) granted by the warden at Ahaura on the 28th ult., the warden remarking that he did not know what effect the operations would have on the freehold lands. — Grey River Argus.

A" proposal is afoot for the establishment of a Slock Exchange at Christchurch. Although the local share list' is at present compaiatively small, one or two brokers express the opinion that a month or two may see it swelled con-siderably,-owing-to a- number of West Coast dredging properties being placed on the market. One gentfernan of a particularly sanguine temperament predicts that dredging on the Coast will supply business for sliarebrokers for the next 50 years. The prospectus of the Royal Maori Gold Diedging Company appears in Wednesday's Daily Times. The company is promoted 'to work a claim on the Clutha Itiver, below Deadman's Point, and includes the beach known as the Clutha Beach, which was worked by a spoon dredge in 1865, and also in 1875. A report from Mr James Ritchie, farmer, accompanies the prospectus. Messr3 Cogaii and Crawford, Dunedin, and Messrs Richards and Jolly, Cromwell, are the brokers. The capital of the company is £'8000, in £1 shares, of which 6000 are available for X^ublic subscription. Up to the time of preparing the prospectus 4000 shares were applied for in Cromwell.

The prospectus of the Hinemoa Gold Dredging Company, situated on the Clutha River, below the influx of the Cardrona River, and adjoining the Upper Clutha Company's claim, will be found in Wednesday's Daily Times. The capital is £7800, in £1 shares, of which 6000 are open_ for public subscription. Mr John F. Kitto, dredgemaster of the Magnetic dredge, states that theie is no drift or large boulders to conlend with, enabling a dredge to work all the year round. Messrs Quick and Smith are the brokers, and Mr Thomas Callender is interim secretary. The brokers report that a largo iiumber of shares have been applied for, one appb cation by telegraph for 850 shares being fiom Macetown.

The prospectus of the White Star Gold Dredging Co. appears in Wednesday's Daily Times. The capital is £6500, in £1 shares, of which 5000 are offered to the public. The claim, which is situated about a mile below Cardrona township, is stated to have been well vrospected, 16 holes having been sunk with boring-rods, and bottom being reached at from {ft to 10ft. Wash was struck- withia 2ft of Hie surface, and in one case 480 cubic feet of wash yielded 3gr to the yard. A report o.i the claim from Me Mitchell, secretary of the Cardrona Miners' Association, also appears, and is endorsed by Mr Willoughby, of Cardrona. Messrs Cogan and Crawford are the brokers. The Dunedin Stock Exchange have adopted new rates of brokerage for both buyers and sellers of mining shares. These rates, the secretary informs us, are not an advance on th.- previous existing rate. The rates are — Up to 6d per share, Jd ; over 6d and up to Is 6d, Id ; over Is 6d and up to 3s, lid ; over 3s and up to ss. 2d ; over 5s and up to 10s, 3d; over 10s and up to 20s, 4d; over 20s and up to 30s, 4Jd; over 30.=, li per cent. The minimum charge for any transaction is 10s.

A hastily convened meeting of shareholders (representing 1000 contributing shares) in the .Bald Hi'l Flat Gold Dredgiug Company was held on the 2nd inst. 1o meet Mr J. Simmonds, of Alexandra, a director of the company. Mr Simmonds recounted at length his mining experience on Bald Hill Flat, and gave tho result of his sluicing operations along the boundary of Kemp's freehold. The Bank of NewZealand .jrold receipts of Carrol and Lynch, who are working near the boundary of Ihe ccmp'aliy'.s property, three-quarters of a mile from the foot of the claim, were produced at the . meeting. Shareholders expressed themselves as highly satisfied with the prospects of Ihe . company, and passed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Simmonds for his attendance at ihe meeting. - THE WEEK'S DREDGING RETURNS.
