WAIWERA.

July 31. — I have been reliably informed that Mrs Cooke's Waiwera friends, as a token of respect and sympathy for .her in her sad trouble, and her compulsory removal from among them, after a peaceful residence of 20 years, have given her and her family very beautiful presents. Mrs Cooke was presented with a lovely quilt, the Misses Cooke a nice brooch each, and Tom Cooke (only son) a set of studs. Anyone interested can see the accounts connected with the expenditure of the money on applying to Mise Maggie Nicol, hon. secretary, Waiwera. Weather. — The heavy fall of snow last week put a stop to all farm work for a time. The poor stock had a- hard time of it for a few days, as the snow lay a good while on the, ground. Sheep especially had difficulty for a day or two in getting food. The weather has, however/ cleared again, and work has been resumed, ploughing being the chief order of the day. From what I can gather, about the usual acreage will be put under crop this season. Concert. — Last week a children's concert was held ie the township in add of the school funds, and the affair proved a decided success. _ Great praise is due to the teachers, Miss Main and Mr Clarke, who must have taken much trouble in training the little ones to such a state of perfection. > Sheep Sales.— Our local sheep sales are net quite so brisk just now as they were a little while ago. Many thousands have changed hands hero lately, our local agents doing the lion s share of the business. Although we had frequent visits from the Canterbury buyers, I think our men held their own very well, and were not often beaten in their prices. Whatever may be. said of the trotting system elsewhere, I candidly believe we have as fail auctioneers as can be found in most places.
