CAMB RIAN S.
August 1. — Everyone here is now sick and | tixed pi the vnntei. and no wonder, foi we axe
having a very trying time of it. It is Ihe long* est and severest winter we have experienced hrre for some years, and it is now beginning to tell on the stock. Had they not been in good condition the fatalities among them would have been great. The snow that fell on Sunday, 23rd, increased that already on the grounrT to about 12in, and the foot traffic was pract;cally stopped until the following day. Two young men, however, scooped" the footpath, enabling the members of the fair sex to walk once more on solid land. It may not be 'out oplace to state that one of the young men had his eye fixed on the upper end of the path, while the other had his nearer the botton.. All agree the frost on the 25th was the hordes : ever experienced here. A change set in oi the 27th, when it began to blow. Later on ii the afternoon this increased to a gale, and ot the 28th and the succeeding day the snow hac disappeared off the low ground, but only to bi replaced by a fourth fall of about 3in, and limit is freezing as hard as ever, so I don't down . that the curlers will have ice to play on their games. Our cldb iff very well satisficr with their achievements, for they won thfdistrict medal, which ia a very handsome trophy, and well worth fighting for. The Apine Club, St. Bathans, which was drawn against them, had no bliow at all with tie Cambrians cracks. Amusements.— "We have had a visit from Mr Don, the Chinese missionary, who gave a magic lantern entertainment in aid of the Chinese mission fund, and considering the state of the weather the attendance was very good. - The " Cloth " in a. Hole.— l hear that the Eev. Mr Gcllie, on his way to preach at Blacks on Sunday got bogged between the Lauder yesterday,- got bogged between, the* - Lander, school and the main road. After a considefc-. able time had elapsed assistance came, and he * was extricated, and advised not to proceed farther, as the- roads were not fit to. travel on. Seeing that the day was far advanced, and he himself wet through, he acted on the advice given, and returned to Cambrians, which ha leached about 6 p.m. Business Enterprise.— They t say competition is the life of every trade. May it prov so with Mr Beatty, of Hyde, who has now decided to deliver goods in this part of the district periodically at Dunedin prices, with ,Jd added for cartage. This will be a boon to those who have to earn their daily bread by the" sweat of their brow. The price charged here for the necessities of life is preposterous, and the time has now arrived when the poor man should have a chance to live. He ha* long felt the need of the railway coming close enough to enable him to get value for his money. Otago Central Railway. — I was pleased to see the ex"-member for Waihemo to* the fore amongst the deputation who waited upon the Minister for Railways to urge upon him the desirability of pushing on the Otago Central with* out delay. No one knows better than Scbia the inconvenience and expense the struggling settlers are put to while waiting for the completion of the line into the interior, which at best is only pushed along at a snail's pace. Coal. — "When I wrote my last all outdoor la« bour was at a standstill, the- coalpit being the only exception. The mea working the pit ara pressed very hard to get out sufficient coal ta keep the drays going; in fact, some of them have had to turn back empty, the demand for coal is so great. The reason of this is that Dungey's pit is shut down for the winter, and so it all has to come from the other.
