BRIBERY IN TURKEY.

CONSTANTINOPLE, April 3. The Porte has not renewed the charter of the Societe Ottoman d'Exchange et Devaleurs of Constantinople, which absorbed the Bank of Constantinople in 1894. It was found that bribes to Government officials, necessary to obtain a renewal of the charter, were so exorbitant that the affairs of the society had to be wound up. The capital of the bank remains intact. The sum of £20,000 was taken from the reserve fund and distributed among the staff of the bank.
